Durham, N.H. - The 17th ranked Dartmouth women's lacrosse team retained Granite State bragging rights with its 13th straight win over the University of New Hampshire, 14-10, this afternoon.
Dartmouth improved to 2-1 with the win while New Hampshire dropped to 1-2. The Big Green leads the all-time series with the Wildcats, 17-16.
It was a coming out party for sophomore Eliza Bennett (Darien, Conn.) who scored five goals. Senior Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) added four goals to the Big Green's tally.
"We had a lot of pretty goals and nice caused turnovers today and we are continuing to get better each day which is our mantra right now," said Head Coach Amy Patton. "We will learn from both the thing we did and did not do well as we prepare for UMass."
Dartmouth came out of the gates fast, scoring two goals in the first four minutes, with one each from Barry and Bennett to take a 2-0 lead. Bennett scored again at 18:56 to make it 3-0 Dartmouth before UNH potted two quick goals to pull within one at 15:29.
Barry responded with a goal eight seconds later before New Hampshire's Ashley Crook scored her second goal of the half to make it 4-3, Dartmouth at 11:01. The Big Green buckled down for the balance of the half, scoring three-straight from Greta Meyer (Denver, Colo.), Colleen Olsen (Avon, Conn.) and Broghan Cully (Duxbury, Mass.) to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Dartmouth kept on scoring the second, increasing its run to seven-straight goals with four unanswered from Barry and Bennett in the first six minutes to go up 11-3 at 24:02.
The Wildcats' Ashley Durego scored back-to-back goals to pull the score to 11-5, but Kathleen Wallace (Shoreham, N.Y.) found Bennett for the first of three more Dartmouth goals to take a commanding 14-5 lead at 5:33. Wallace also scored a goal of her own in that stretch off a free position shot as did Katherine Chiusano (Medford, Mass.)
Dartmouth gave up five late goals to the Wildcats in the last 2:25 to take it to the final, 14-10.
Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) finished with seven saves, earning her second win of the season.
Olsen paced the Dartmouth midfield with five groundballs and two caused turnovers while Meyer continued to be a force on the draw with five draw controls.
The Big Green is back in action at home this week when it hosts UMass on Wednesday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. on Memorial Field.
