Providence, R.I. ? The
20th ranked
Dartmouth
women's lacrosse team took an 8-5 loss at Ivy foe Brown this afternoon.
A strong defensive effort by the Bears, led by goalkeeper
Melissa King's nine saves, kept the Big Green in check despite holding a 17-15
shot advantage. Dartmouth
drops to 4-4 (1-2 Ivy) with the loss while Brown improves to 4-5 (1-1 Ivy).
Things opened on a positive note for the Big Green when
senior All-America candidate
Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.)
scored just under two minutes into the contest to give Dartmouth an early 1-0 lead. That advantage held
until 18:49 when Brown's Krystina DeLuca scored the first of three unanswered
goals for the Bears to take a 3-1 lead at 11:01.
Things stagnated in the period before Dartmouth rallied late in the half to get
back into the game. Sophomore Eliza Bennett (Darien,
Conn.) scored an unassisted tally at 2:45
before rookie Kat Collins (Darien,
Conn.) scored her eighth goal of
the season at 1:35 to tie the game at 3-3 going into halftime.
Brown started the second half by scoring two goals in the
first five minutes to build a 5-3 lead after Lauren Vitkus' goal at 25:51.
Barry got Dartmouth
back on the board 12 minutes later with an unassisted goal to pull her team
within one. It was still anyone's game at that point but the Bears seized an
advantage when they connected on back-to-back free position attempts less than a
minute apart at 9:24 and 8:35 to go up 7-4.
The Big Green got one more on the board when senior Kate
Labrum (Wallingford, Pa.) found Bennett at 5:32 to make it 7-5, but
it did not have enough left for the comeback. Brown's Vitkus put an exclamation
point on the win for her team with her third goal of the game at 1:12 for the
final, 8-5.
Dartmouth
was 0-for-5 on free position shots while Brown connected on both of its
attempts. Sophomore Alex Huestis (Swarthmore,
Pa.) did a solid job defensively
for the Big Green, with five caused turnovers and four groundballs. Classmate
Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) made three saves in goal.
The Big Green is back in action at home on Tuesday, April 1
when it hosts Vermont
at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Field.
