Hanover, N.H. ? The
clash of a red hot rookie attack and a stone-faced senior goalkeeper made for
some fireworks today on Scully-Fahey Field, but the veteran won out as Stanford
took an 11-10 victory over Kat Collins (Darien, Conn.) and Dartmouth
this afternoon.
It was a battle for the full 60 minutes, but Stanford (9-8) came
from behind to steal the victory from Dartmouth
(7-8) today. Collins had five goals and one assist to pace the Big Green while
senior Kristen Barry (Duxbury,
Mass.) added three goals.
Dartmouth
won the first draw and settled in on offense, running its sets until the rookie
Collins converted a free position shot to give the Big Green an early 1-0 lead
at 28:08. Stanford answered back at 25:37 when Karen Nesbitt found Julie
Christy in front of the goal for an open look.
Collins was at it again on the next possession, drawing a
shooting space call on the right side and taking it in herself to best Stanford
goalie Laura Shane, putting Dartmouth up 2-1 at 23:32. The Big Green expanded
its lead seven minutes later when Broghan Cully (Duxbury, Mass.)
threaded the needle with a nice pass to Barry from behind the cage. Barry
eluded a pair of defenders and slipped the ball past Shane for the 3-1 Dartmouth lead. Cully
took centerstage on the next possession when Collins drew a free position on
the left side and passed the ball to Cully who hammered it home at 14:59.
Collins made Stanford pay again when she converted her third
free position goal of the game at 13:03. The Cardinal answered back when it
finally got another offensive possession. Dana Lindsay drew a free position and
passed it off to Bess Siegfried, who ripped a shot past Dartmouth
goalkeeper Julie Wadland (Andover,
Mass.) from the right side at
10:05. Stanford had almost the exact same play a minute later when Jamie
Nesbitt drew the foul and dumped it off to Ashley Aruffo who was right in front
of the goal to make it 5-4 at 9:04.
Barry pulled Dartmouth's
lead back up to two when she drew a foul on the left side and snuck past two
Cardinal defenders before firing a rocket in the high left corner. Just over a
minute later, Cully scored her second goal of the game, unassisted at 4:14 to
give the Big green a 7-4 lead. The Cardinal managed to get two quick goals in
the last two minute of the game, both from Claire Hubbard including one with
six seconds on the clock to make it 7-6, Dartmouth
at the half.
The Cardinal opened the second half where it left off, when
Megan McClain beat Wadland to tie it at 7-7 at 27:37. The Big Green regained
the lead when Cate Goytisolo (Cockeysville,
Md.) found Collins from the far
side of the cage and Collins hammered it home to take the 8-7 lead. Stanford
answered immediately with a goal 28 seconds later from Christy and took the 9-8
lead at 25:21 when Daphne Patterson scored off a feed from Lindsay. Christy
added another tally at 22:48 to extend the Cardinal's lead to 10-8, its largest
of the game.
After nearly 13 scoreless minutes, but plenty of
opportunities for both teams, Stanford got back on the scoreboard when
Patterson scored a free position goal at 9:54. Barry answered with Dartmouth's first goal
since the 25th minute when she converted a free position at 6:29 to
make it 11-9 Stanford. It was the free position again and Collins yet again,
converting for the Big Green at 4:31 to pull within one. Despite several good
looks and a late Stanford turnover, Dartmouth
could not get an 11th goal and Stanford held out for the 11-10
victory.
Shane finished a great day with 15 saves in goal for
Stanford while Wadland made eight saves for Dartmouth. The Big Green held a 33-28 shot
advantage and won 13 draw controls to the Cardinal's nine. Seniors Liz Spence (Concord, Mass.) and Kate
Labrum (Wallingford, Pa.)
had good days defensively for Dartmouth,
each causing two turnovers and picking up three and four groundballs,
respectively.
Dartmouth will be back in action for its final game of the season when it hosts Duke this Sunday, May 3 at 6:00 p.m.
