5-0 run late in the first half set #11 Duke (11-7) up to take a 17-11 victory
over the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team (7-9) under the lights at Scully-Fahey
Field tonight.
It was senior day for the Big Green but its freshmen showed
they are ready to continue the tradition, accounting for seven of Dartmouth's 11 goals.
Duke came out of the gates hard, scoring two quick goals by
Allie Johnson and Jess Adam to take the early 2-0 lead. Dartmouth
had its own ideas, however, quickly getting back the two tallies, starting with
a goal by rookie Broghan Cully (Duxbury, Mass.) off a feed from Cate Goytisolo (Cockeysville, Md.)
at 25:19. A hustle play led to the Big Green's next goal. After Dartmouth threw the ball away in midfield, rookie Kat
Collins (Darien, Conn.) fought for the ground ball and came
up with it, sprinting down the field and beating Duke goalkeeper Kim Imbesi
one-on-one to tie it up, 2-2.
Duke regained the lead at 15:09 when Christie Kaestner
connected off a nice pass from Megan Del Monte to make it 3-2, Blue Devils. The
Big Green quickly responded when freshman Greta Meyer (Denver, Colo.)
converted a good free-position shot at 14:33, tying the game at 3-3.
The teams battled it out during a scoreless 12 minute span,
trading possessions while each defense came up with several big stops. Duke
broke the stalemate at 1:52 when Sarah Bullard scored off a pass from behind
the cage Del Monte.
Then the floodgates opened. The Devils won the ensuing draw
control and scored a quick goal to increase its lead to 5-3 with 35 seconds
left and then poured in another in the same fashion to go up 6-3 with 25 ticks
on the clock. A Dartmouth
player received a yellow card following the goal, giving Duke the automatic
draw control which they used to their advantage to score immediately. It was
the exact same situation after that goal, with another Big Green card and
another automatic draw for the Devils, who scored with nine seconds left in the
half to take an 8-3 lead at the break.
Duke picked up where it left off with an early goal off a
free-position by Lindsay Gillbride, but Dartmouth
answered back when Collins fed the ball to Goytisolo to make it 9-4 at 28:40.
The Blue Devils scored two of the next three goals, both by Gillbride, with a
Big Green goal in the middle from Meyer, assisted by Collins, for an 11-5 Duke
lead at 24:53.
Dartmouth senior Kristen
Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) got her first goal of the day at
22:55 when she took matters into her own hands to make it 11-6. Barry made a
couple of loops in the arc before going to the right and completely faking out
her defender for a beautiful goal in front of the cage. Duke answered back twofold,
however, to build its lead up to 13-6 at 18:51.
The Big Green got on the board again when Barry got the ball
to Collins at the top of the arc and Collins ploughed through the Duke defense
and nailed a high shot
past Imbesi to make it 13-7 at 18:40. Dartmouth
continued to show its fight when rookie Kathleen Wallace (Shoreham, N.Y.)
drew a free position at about the 18-meter mark and fired a rocket to pull the
Big Green within five. The joy was short-lived, however, as the Blue Devils
scored the next three goals of the game including a pair from Gilbride to build
a 16-8 lead with 8:09 left in the game.
Dartmouth scored three of the
last four goals in the game including free-position goals from Colleen Olsen (Avon, Conn.)
and Meyer, to take the final to 17-11, Duke.
Meyer finished with three goals for Dartmouth while Collins tallied a team-high
four points along with three groundballs. Barry finished with two points, six
groundballs, two caused turnovers and two draw controls in a great effort. Nine
different Blue Devils scored in the game, with Gilbride leading the way off the
bench with five goals.
Dartmouth
excelled in the hustle categories, with 26 groundballs to Duke's 15 and winning
18 of 30 draw controls. Duke held a 32-26 shot advantage.
Prior to the game, Dartmouth
honored its four seniors: Kristen Barry (Duxbury,
Mass.), Liz Spence (Concord,
Mass.), Kate Labrum (Wallingford,
Pa.) and Ashley Heist (Bryn Mawr, Pa.).
In four years, the group has amassed 46 victories, brought home two Ivy League
Championships and made two NCAA Final Four appearances.
