Ithaca, N.Y.
? The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team ran into a hot goalkeeper in Ithaca, as Cornell's
Kristen Reese made 11 saves to stonewall the Big Green in a heartbreaking 10-9
loss.
The Big Green drops to 5-5, 1-3 Ivy with the setback while
Cornell improves to 5-4, 2-2 Ivy.
"I am proud of our team because this was the best game
we have played all year from start to finish against a strong opponent,"
said head coach Amy Patton. "We played 60 minutes of Dartmouth lacrosse and though we did well in
a lot of categories, some late game turnovers hurt us. It's unfortunate that we
did not come out on top."
Dartmouth outshot Cornell,
25-21, for the game but Reese's effort kept her team in the game including two
huge saves in the final two minutes when she stopped shots by Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) and Greta
Meyer (Denver, Colo.).
Cornell came out of the gates quickly, scoring back-to-back
goals just 24 seconds apart to go up 2-0 at 25:10. Katherine Simmons
contributed a goal and an assist during that run. The Big Green got on the
board at 22:40 with a tally from Kat Collins (Darien, Conn.)
but it was short lived as the Big Red soon increased its lead to 3-1 off a
Noelle Dowd score.
The Big Green flexed its muscles for the balance of the
half, going on a 4-0 run to eventually take a 5-3 lead at halftime. Four
different players scored with Barry starting things off with an unassisted
goal. Collins followed with her second of the day before Meyer converted a
free-position attempt and Eliza Bennett (Darien,
Conn.) connected on a feed from senior Kate
Labrum (Wallingford, Pa.) with four seconds left on the clock.
Cornell responded quickly to Dartmouth's run in the second, tying the
score at 5-5 by 26:13. Meyer regained the lead for the Big Green with her
second free-position goal of the Day at 20:33 before Cornell scored twice more
to make it 7-6, Big Red.
Barry hammered home her 24th goal of the season
at 9:16, tying the game and starting a wild finish. The Big Red scored two
quick goals to go up 9-7 before Dartmouth's Cate
Goytisolo (Cockeysville, Md.) connected off a feed from Collins to
pull the Big Green within one at 6:13. Cornell extended its lead with another goal
before Meyer scored off a feed from Barry at 3:41 to make it 10-9.
With Reese's late-game effort, Dartmouth was unable to tie the game in the
final minutes and Cornell took the win.
Meyer led her team with three goals while Collins added two
goals, one assist and three groundballs. Barry finished with three points along
with three draw controls and two groundballs.
The Big Green is back at home next Saturday, April 12 when
it hosts Penn at 1:00 p.m. There will be an admission charge at the event.
