HANOVER, N.H. – Juniors Corey Delaney and Jackie Friedman scored to give the Dartmouth women's soccer team a 2-0 win over Penn on Saturday afternoon at Burnham Field.
With the triumph, Dartmouth moves to 4-4-4 overall and 1-0-3 in Ivy League play. Penn falls to 5-5-2 and 1-3-0 in league play.
The Big Green outshot Penn 8-4 and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Tatiana Saunders made two saves for her second win of the season.
Dartmouth took a one-goal lead in the 35th minute. Sophomore Meredith Gurnee dribbled into Penn territory and dished out a pass to freshman Melanie Vangel on the wing, who then sent a one-timer to Delaney for the goal. Dartmouth went into the break with a 3-2 edge in shots.
"I think when we calmed down and started to string some passes together, while still playing hard defensively, I feel that it opened up some scoring chances for us,"head coach Ron Rainey said.
In the second the Big Green took a two-goal lead off a long boot by Friedman from 25 yards out to the far post. After the Dartmouth goal, Penn had two quick chances, but both shots went wide of the cage.
"Picking up a two-goal lead it allowed us to be more comfortable defending the lead," Rainey commented.
In the 73rd minute, Friedman had an opportunity to give the Big Green a two-goal lead, but her shot was kicked out of the net by a Penn defender. The Dartmouth midfielder then had another chance in the 84th minute, but her shot jetted over the net. Freshman Lindsay Knutson moved the ball into the box but had back-to-back shots blocked.
Dartmouth did not allow the Quakers a shot for the final 36 minutes of play. The Quakers though did have two corner kicks in the last three minutes of regulation, but the Big Green did a good job clearing the zone.
"Our defense refocused after allowing Penn a couple of chances during the game," Rainey said.
The Big Green will travel to the Empire State for games against Columbia next Saturday and then Marist on Oct. 27.
