NEW YORK – Senior Tasha Wilkins scored the lone goal off a free kick in the 19th minute to give the Dartmouth women's soccer team a, 1-0, win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
The Big Green striker found the back of the net from the right side of the box for her fourth goal of the season. Senior Tatiana Saunders made six stops for the visitors and her counterpart Allison Spencer made four saves. Columbia finished the game with a 10-9 edge in shots.
"I am very proud of our effort today against a very good defensive team," said head coach Ron Rainey. "We held strong for 90 minutes, especially in the final half. I am excited to move forward and compete against Marist on Monday."
With the triumph, Dartmouth improves its record to 5-4-4 overall and 2-0-3 in the Ivy League. Columbia falls to 6-3-5 and 2-2-1 in league play.
Dartmouth had opportunities early in the game and was led by freshman Lindsay Knutson with two shots on goal. Columbia's Coleen Rizzo had a header stopped in the fourth minute and then again in the 12th minute, as the Big Green keeper recorded her fifth shutout of the season. Saunders is now 3-4-4 overall. In the 35th minute, Natalie Neshat has a chance to tie the game but Saunders kept the Big Green ahead.
In the second half, junior Corey Delaney served a corner kick to sophomore Piper Curtis but her shot went wide in the 60th minute. Columbia didn't make it easy for the Big Green as the Lion pressured the Big Green in the final 10 minutes of play. In the 84th minute Sarah Forthal's shot was pushed aside and then Rizzo has her header blocked off a corner kick in the last 40 seconds.
Dartmouth will stay in the Empire State for the remainder of the weekend and meet Marist on Monday night.
