POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior Lucielle Kozlov scored her team-best fifth goal of the season as the Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated Marist, 1-0, in non-conference play on Monday evening at Tenney Stadium.
The win puts Dartmouth 6-4-4 overall with an Ivy League showdown set for Saturday evening at Burnham Field against Harvard. The Big Green are 2-0-3 in league play with nine points, while the Crimson are 4-0-1 with 13 points. Harvard is 9-3-2 overall.
“We found our rhythm in the last 70 minutes of the game and created some nice chances,” said head coach Ron Rainey. “The goal was a great combination and we are ready to have great a week of school and training leading up to Harvard on Saturday.”
Kozlov's tally in the 71st minute was setup by sophomore Meredith Gurnee and senior Kate Castillo. The goal was chipped in from five yards out after Gurnee sent a pass to the top right corner of the box. Dartmouth outshot Marist by a 14-8 margin and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Tatiana Saunders made three saves for her sixth shutout of the season. Marist keeper Andrea Wicks made five saves but was dealt the loss after allowing Kozlov's marker.
Marist finished the first frame with a 5-4 advantage in shots, as the Big Green rattled off the first two opportunities by junior Corey Delaney and senior Kendall Kraus. Marist then had three shots sandwiched in-between two corner kicks. In the 30th minute, junior Jackie Friedman had her shot stopped by Wicks.
In the second stanza, Castillo had a shot blocked and junior Jill Dayneka had her shot sail wide. Dartmouth kept the ball in Marist's zone for over seven minutes resulting in five shots and three corner kicks. In the 67th minute Kozlov hit the post and then scored the lone goal three minutes later. After the Dartmouth goal, the visitors had three more attempts which included a hit crossbar by Gurnee.
