HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's rugby team remains perfect against Ivy opponents this fall with a 20-15 victory Saturday at Brophy Field against visiting Harvard.
The Big Green led by as many as 15 in the second half and managed to hold off a Crimson comeback bid in the final minute to improve to 4-1 overall this season and 4-0 in conference games — the only team with an unblemished ivy mark to this point. Harvard levels off at 2-2 in Ivy games this fall and 3-2 overall.
“I thought we had a few moments of real brilliance,” head coach Katie Dowty said. “The 16th player really helped us today. The crowd and all the returning alumni who were here today made a huge difference for us. They definitely upped the energy out there on the field on our side.
“I'm happy with the win and happy to be 4-0 against the Ivies,” Dowty continued. “There is always more to improve upon, but I was very pleased with what we were able to go out there and do today.”
Two second-half tries from Alex Stendahl proved to be crucial as they produced the only Big Green points of the half. The Crimson had an opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds, but had the ball knocked forward, losing possession and giving the Green and White the 'W'.
Dartmouth took a 10-5 lead into the break as Tatjana Toeldte and Yejadai Dunn started things off with tries in the 16th and 23rd minutes, respectively. The Crimson scored in extra time on a try from Grace Chao to make it a five-point game at the intermission.
As the second stanza started, Stendahl took matters into her own hands, scoring a pair of tries in the first 20 minutes to build the Dartmouth lead to 20-5.
Caitlin Weigel and Susie Clements notched the final two tries of the game, but they would not be enough to overcome the Big Green's lead as the Crimson comeback bid fell short.
Dartmouth will have a bit of a respite as they don't play again until Oct. 31 when it heads to play Yale at 10 a.m.
