HANOVER, N.H. – Heavyweight rowing's Stuart Maeder '15 competed at the 2015 Under 23 & Senior National Team Trials on Mercer Lake earlier this week, winning the men's pair event.
He and Kevin Bielawski will represent Team USA at the World Rowing Under 23 Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, July 22-26.
"Stu has worked incredibly hard over his four years at Dartmouth and made huge contributions to the program," head coach Wyatt Allen said. "It is really nice to see him successfully pursuing his goal of rowing at the next level. I can't wait to watch him race on the world stage next month in Bulgaria."
After starting even with Conshohocken Rowing Center's James McManus and Joseph Pinnola-Vizza, Maeder and Bielawski made a decisive move at the 500-meter mark to quickly pull away from the other crews to take the lead. With a time of 6:55.11, the pair became first-time U.S. Under 23 National Team members.
During his final season as a Big Green rower, Maeder appeared in the first varsity eight boat for every race, usually in the six seat. At the EARC Sprints Regatta, Dartmouth's varsity eight finished as the eighth-fastest crew out of 21 boats with a 5:42.641, taking fifth in the Petite Final in 5:45.656.
To end the year at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Regatta, he helped the varsity eight win the third final in 5:43.054 and finish 13th in the country. Maeder was the recipient of two awards at the team's end-of-the-year banquet: the Peter V.W. Gardner Award to recognize the inspirational leadership and honorable character of former coach Gardner, and the Thaddeus Seymour Rowing Award, to honor the undergraduate who made the greatest contribution to the team.
