HANOVER, N.H. – Princeton scored two goals in the game's opening seven minutes, as the Dartmouth women's soccer team fell to the Tigers, 2-0 in New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Big Green to 6-4-0, 0-2-0 in the Ivy League, while Princeton improves to 8-1-1, 1-0-1 in conference play.
Dartmouth came into Saturday's contest with one of the best defenses in the Ivy League, allowing just four goals in nine prior matches. The Tigers quickly jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 5th minute when Mimi Asom crossed a pass over to Princeton's leading goal scorer, Tyler Lussi. With Abby Givens waiting in the box, Lussi sent a cross over to Givens who fired a hard shot that beat Casey Cousineau to her right side.
Just two minutes later, the Tigers added to their lead on a header from Lussi. Jesse McDonough lined up for a free kick near midfield and found Lussi in the box for Princeton's second tally of the day.
“It was tough giving up the early goals, but as the game went on we were able to create some chances,” said Big Green head coach Ron Rainey. “In the second half we tried to look at some formation changes to generate some more opportunities. It's tough in this league spotting a team two goals, but we'll fix those things and work hard to get ready to take on Yale.”
Dartmouth despite being down two scores did not back down. In the 32nd minute, the Big Green got their first shot that went wide. A few minutes later Holly Paterson passed the ball to Meredith Gurnee who made a nice move around a defender and fired a hard shot that had to be saved.
After the halftime break Dartmouth came out looking to get on the scoreboard early to try to make it a one-score game. In the 53rd minute, the Big Green had their best look of the second half when Charlotte Esty got past the first line of Tiger defenders, but her shot was deflected away.
Princeton did a solid job keeping Dartmouth out of the attacking zone in the second stanza, as the Big Green were outshot, 13-6 through 90 minutes of play. With 10 minutes to go in the contest, Remy Borinsky had a nice chance to get her team its first goal of the game, but could not find the back of the net.
Dartmouth returns to action next Saturday when the Big Green host Yale at 4 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers.
