HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team battled hard, but fell to Yale, 1-0, at Burnham Field on Saturday evening.
The loss drops the Big Green to 6-5-0, 0-2-0 in the Ivy League, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-4-3, 1-1-1 in conference play.
The first half got off to a slow start as Dartmouth took the only shot in the first 15 minutes of the contest. In the 24th minute, the Big Green had their best scoring chance of the first stanza when Gia Parker got a nice shot off that had to be saved.
Dartmouth did a decent job keeping the ball in the attacking end, limiting the Bulldogs' chances to get something going on offense. With about 12 minutes to play in the half, Yale was awarded three corner kicks in a 2 to 3-minute span, but the Big Green defense held and did not allow a score.
After halftime both squads returned to the field to attempt to break the scoreless stalemate. Dartmouth had its best chance of the afternoon when Remy Borinsky came sprinting up the near side and nearly beat the Bulldogs' keeper to the right post.
Yale eventually broke the game open in the 72nd minute when Noelle Higginson scored her first collegiate goal. Hannah Coy hit Higginson with a pass that Higginson buried in the upper right corner of the net from about 18 yards out.
“We worked tremendously hard today,” Big Green head coach, Ron Rainey said. “I think in these one goal games, the margin for error is slim. While we created some good chances, so did Yale. I think all we can do is keep working hard and keep battling. I think the league is really close and we'll have a similar game next week.”
Dartmouth continued to try and get chances, outshooting the Bulldogs 9-5 through 90 minutes of play, but they Big Green could not get on the scoreboard. Dartmouth's senior goalkeeper, Casey Cousineau, finished the game with two saves, while Alyssa Fagel made seven on the other end of the field for Yale.
The Big Green return to Burnham Field next Saturday when they host Penn at 7 p.m.
