PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Dan Peterson twirled seven scoreless innings while striking out nine batters to help Indiana State (6-2) defeat the Dartmouth Big Green (0-3) on Sunday at the Snowbird Classic, 3-0. Andy Young scored two of the three runs for the Sycamores in a day dominated by the pitching staffs.
Peterson (2-0) faced four batters over the minimum in his seven stanzas, throwing 99 pitches. The Big Green managed just three hits off of him — singles by juniors
Michael Ketchmark and
Ben Socher, and a bloop double off the bat of sophomore
Kyle Holbrook — and Peterson issued just a solitary walk.
The only real trouble he faced came in the second inning when senior
Joe Purritano drew a leadoff base on balls and went to second on Ketchmark's two-out single. But after going to a 3-1 count on freshman
Steffen Torgersen, he induced a ground ball to second to end the frame.
By that time, Indiana State had already spotted him a lead with a run in the bottom of the first. The Sycamores took advantage of some early wildness by sophomore
Clay Chatham (0-1), making his first collegiate start, as Young was hit by a pitch and Tyler Friis walked on five pitches to start the inning. After a fly to center sent Young to third base, Chatham got the second out on strikes. But Jeff Zahn found a hole between first and second for an RBI single and a 1-0 ISU lead.
Indiana State worked some two-out magic in the second after Chatham retired the first two hitters on fly balls. Dominic Bifano pulled a single through the left side of the infield and Young was plunked by another pitch before Friis rapped a full-count pitch for a single to plate Bifano. Hunter Owen followed with another run-scoring knock to give the Sycamores a 3-0 advantage.
Chatham was relieved by sophomore
Patrick Peterson to start the fourth, and he shut down ISU on two hits over three innings while striking out three. Junior
Michael Danielak, making his first appearance since the 2014 season, retired all six batters he faced with three punchouts to finish out the game for the Big Green.
In the eighth, Indiana State turned to Greg Kuhlman to take over for Peterson on the mound. He quickly got the first two outs, but walked freshman pinch hitter
Matt Feinstein. That brought Damon Olds in from the bullpen, who finished off the inning unscathed.
Olds ran into trouble in the ninth, however, as senior
Thomas Roulis singled and Purritano doubled him to third. With the tying run at the plate, Olds was able to preserve the shutout on a sharp grounder to third, a pop to the mound and a called third strike for his first save of the year.
Dartmouth returns to the Sunshine State next weekend for its toughest test of the year with a three-game series against top-ranked Florida. The first game of the series will be played on Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
