HANOVER, N.H. – After two scoreless halves and one scoreless overtime period, Dartmouth freshman Alyssa Neuberger broke the stalemate with her first career goal to propel the Big Green past Marist, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Burnham Field.
With the victory, Dartmouth opens the 2016 season 1-0-0, while the Red Foxes fall to 1-1-0.
As the clock approached six minutes in the second overtime period, sophomore Remy Borinsky passed the ball from the middle of the field to Neuberger. After working around a Marist defender, the Germantown, Tennessee, native fired a shot from the right side of the box and buried it in the left side of the net for her first collegiate goal.
“You saw us in the second half up the attacks a little bit and get some good chances on goal,” Big Green head coach Ron Rainey said. “That carried through into the overtime where we had a couple of good chances. It was awesome to see.”
For the majority of the contest, Dartmouth controlled the tempo, outshooting the Red Foxes 18-5 overall after a slow start to the game for both teams. In the first half neither squad recorded a shot for the first 13 minutes of the game.
The Big Green's first scoring chance came late in the first on a shot from junior Gia Parker, which forced Marist's goalkeeper to come out and challenge the shot.
In the second half Dartmouth continued to keep the pressure on the Red Foxes' end of the field. With 26:09 remaining in regulation, senior captain Holly Patterson went on a breakaway and crossed the ball to freshman Charlotte Esty, but she could not find the the back of the net.
Later in the period, freshman Zoe Enright nearly broke the scoreless tie when she caught Marist's goalie out of position, but her shot sailed just wide to the left of the goal.
After neither team could put a tally on the scoreboard, the game went into its first 10-minute overtime. Sophomore Lauren Lucas nearly ended it for the Big Green with a shot that missed the post by inches in the final three minutes of the period.
Between the pipes, it was a solid outing for Dartmouth's senior goalkeeper, Casey Cousineau, who recorded four saves.
“I think people on the field did a nice job,” Rainey said. “Of course we can work on everything and get better this early in the season, but I like how people are approaching the game and I like how the team approached the game.”
The Big Green return to action on Sunday, August 28 at 1 p.m. when Dartmouth welcomes Iona to Burnham Field. The game can be seen on the Ivy League Digitial Network.
