HANOVER, N.H. – After a pair of first half goals, the Dartmouth women's soccer team tacked on one more tally in the second to defeat Iona, 3-0, at Burnham Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Big Green improve to 2-0-0, while the Gaels drop to 0-4-0.
For the majority of the contest, the action remained on Iona's end of the field, as Dartmouth outshot its opponent 18-5, which included eight shots in the first half. Big Green head coach Ron Rainey was happy with what he saw from his offense in the 90 minutes of action.
“I really liked how we played the first half and kept them under a lot of pressure,” Rainey said. “We didn't give up any corner kicks and only gave up two shots. In the second half we talked about getting that third goal and to score within eight minutes of the start of the second half, it was nice to see. We realized we have to keep progressing in all areas, but it was nice to see the transition in the second game in three days.”
Dartmouth's first tally of the afternoon came when the Gael's goalie miss-handled the ball and freshman Charlotte Esty fired the loose ball into the net for her first career goal.
The Big Green would not have to wait very long to add to their lead. Just over three minutes after Esty's goal, Brittany Champagne corralled a loose ball near the top of the box and hit Meredith Gurnee with a pass to the center of the box. Gurnee avoided a defender before burying a shot in the center of the net to put Dartmouth ahead 2-0.
After the break, the Big Green continued to keep the pressure on Iona. Etsy added to her solid afternoon by playing the ball to the right of the Gael's net before hitting senior captain Holly Patterson with a crisp pass to the center of the box. With 36 minutes to play, Patterson fired a hard shot that beat Iona's goalkeeper for the 3-0 lead.
“When our possession was good and we kept the ball in play, but away from the goalkeeper in the second half it generated some nice chances and crosses,” Rainey said. “To Iona's credit they had a couple of good restarts that we had to deal with.”
Throughout the remainder of the game Dartmouth controlled the pace of play, as senior goalkeeper Casey Cousineau needed to make just four saves to pick up her second win of the season between the pipes.
The Big Green return to action on Sept. 2 when Dartmouth travels to Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m.
