HANOVER, N.H. – Despite outshooting Brown by a 12-4 margin, the Dartmouth women's soccer team fell to the Bears in its Ivy League opener, 1-0, at Burnham Field on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops the Big Green to 6-3-0, 0-1-0 in the Ivy League, while Brown improves to 5-1-3, 1-0-0 in conference play.
Dartmouth ran into a solid goalkeeper in the Bears' Christine Etzel, who has only surrendered one goal all season. On the other side of the field Big Green senior goalkeeper, Casey Cousineau, kept Dartmouth in the contest as she finished the day with five saves through 90 minutes.
“We've played nine games and I want to say this is either the fifth or sixth 1-0 game,” Big Green head coach Ron Rainey said. “I think we created some nice chances and limited their chances in the second half. A lot of these Ivy League games are going to be decided by one goal. A lot of times scoring that first goal is huge. I like how we battled back in the second half to try to tie the score. I think there's a lot of nice things that we can work off of from today.”
After a quiet opening 20 minutes, the first solid scoring opportunity of the game came when Brown took a shot that forced Cousineau to jump up and make a save. About 15 minutes later, the Bears nearly had a wide open shot, but a nice defensive play by Alyssa Neuberger cleared the ball out of the box to keep the game scoreless.
With just two minutes before the halftime whistle, Brown did get on the scoreboard when Kate Maher kicked in a loose ball that nearly went out of play over the crossbar for the only goal of the game.
After the break the Big Green came out with a lot of speed and urgency to get the equalizer. Six minutes into the second frame, Zoe Enright with a full head of steam attempted to cross the ball into the box, but it was cleared away by the defense.
Two minutes later the Bears nearly made it a two-goal game, but Cousineau made a great save to keep her team within one. After the key stop by its keeper, Dartmouth with momentum tried to create more chances on the other end of the field. Remy Borinsky had a good look on net, but her shot sailed high.
With 16 minutes to play the Big Green were awarded a free kick from about 10-yards out, but could not burry the shot in the back of the net.
Dartmouth had one more chance to score with less than one minute to play in the game when the ball was loose in the crease as a scrum of players tried to come up with it, but Brown cleared it out to record the win in regulation.
The Big Green continue Ancient Eight play next weekend when Dartmouth travels to Princeton on Oct. 1. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers.
Notes
For the Big Green, the loss snapped a three-game win streak that dated back to Sept. 11 when Dartmouth defeated Fairleigh Dickinson before taking down Albany at home and Vermont on the road.
