HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team led from start to finish, cruising to a 16-5 win Wednesday afternoon against Vermont at Scully-Fahey Field.
The 16th-ranked Big Green played perhaps their most complete game of the season en route to the victory that improved their overall record to 9-3 this season. The Catamounts dropped to 4-11 with the road loss.
The team's trend of balanced scoring continued Wednesday as the home team saw 10 players score a goal. Freshman Michelle Yu came off the bench to record three tallies, marking her first career multi-goal game. Junior Kellen D'Alleva, who also set a single-game high with three tallies, matched Yu for the team lead.
Kierra Sweeney scored twice with Campbell Brewer, Tori Chanenchuk and Ellie Carson the only other starters to find the back of the net in the game, doing so once each.
Away from the goals, the highlight of the day was junior Kathryn Giroux becoming just the fourth Ivy League player and the first Dartmouth player to reach 200 draw controls in her career. She came into the game with 195 and added another nine to her two and a half year total. With three games remaining in the regular season, her 79 this season is the third-best single-season mark in program history.
"I'm pleased with our focused effort today on the draw controls and ground balls, those two categories really define our style of lacrosse," head coach Danielle Spencer said. "We are excited to earn this win at home and we cannot wait to battle again on Saturday against a tough conference opponent in Yale."
The Green and White scored the first 13 goals of the game, taking a 10-0 lead with 12:55 to play in the opening half, forcing the clock to run for the remainder of the afternoon. It was only in the final minute of the first frame when Vermont finally managed to get on the board, but by then it was too late.
Though the Catamounts outscored the Big Green, 4-3, in the second half, the lead never dropped below 10, which meant the clock never stopped.
One of three reserves to come off the bench and score multiple goals, Sophia Turchetta beat the UVM goalkeepers twice in the win. Larson Bennett, Katie O'Neill and Sarah Ross all added one apiece.
Starting goalie Kiera Vrindten made four saves in 30 minutes of action, surrendering just the one goal against. Katie Foreman came in for the majority of the second half before making way for sophomore Charlotte Wahle.
The Catamounts were led by Jenna James and Bailey Saneman and their two goals each. Maddy Kura made five saves in the loss, while Catherine Green stopped four in the final half.
The Green and White held a 33-13 edge in shot attempts, a 20-10 advantage in ground balls and a 14-9 lead in draw controls.
Dartmouth returns to action Saturday at home against Ivy League rival Yale at 4 p.m. The game will be carried live on the Ivy League Network as well as ESPN3. The Big Green are currently 4-1 in conference play, good for second in the standings with just two Ivy games remaining.
