No. 1 Boston College Too Much Down the Stretch for Dartmouth

Big Green battle, but BC's Sam Appuzo finishes with 10 points.
NEWTON, Mass. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference road game Wednesday afternoon at No. 1 Boston College.
The top-ranked Eagles (5-0) showed why they are one of the best offensive units in the country and the No. 1 team in all three national polls, pulling away from the Big Green (1-3), 20-10, at Newton Campus Fields.
It was the Sam Appuzo show on this day as last year's Tewaaraton Award winner as the top player in the nation scored eight times and finished with 10 points to move into a first-place tie in all-time scoring at Boston College. Her first point of the day was the 300th of her career, and she didn't slow down from there, adding nine more before the final horn sounded.
"We played to win today; we did not play it safe. And in many ways because of that, we took a couple hits which are reflected in the final score." head coach Danielle Spencer said. "But I am proud of our team for playing that way. We are constantly improving, and I cannot wait to see us start Ivy play this Saturday. "
For the visitors, the offense went through senior and assistant captain Elizabeth Mastrio and her four scores. Kierra Sweeney added a pair as well with Campbell Brewer, Katie Bourque, Kathryn Giroux and Kellen D'Alleva all finding the back of the net once.
Giroux had eight of the team's 13 draw controls on the day.
Early on, it looked like the tight game these two teams played on this same field last year would repeat itself as Dartmouth opened the scoring and with BC holding just a 9-6 edge at the break, but it didn't end up that way.
The high-powered Eagles stormed out of the gates in the second half, doubling up on Dartmouth, 16-8, by the midway point of the frame. It never felt like the game was out of reach for the Green and White, though, as the defense made several stops and the offense would respond with a goal of its on.
Boston College would slowly add to its lead with two runs of four-straight goals in the second half to pick up its fourth-straight win in the series between the two programs.
Making her first career start, BC goalkeeper Abbey Ngai played well, making 12 saves and allowing 10. Dartmouth's Kiera Vrindten made six saves in the loss.
This game was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Hanover, but was moved to Newton due to high winds and low temperatures in the Upper Valley.
The Big Green will host Brown on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a game that will serve as the home and Ivy League opener.
