HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's rowing team has announced the 2018-19 awards at the team's annual end-of-year banquet at the Hanover Inn.
Â
The Season of 1979 Women's Cup for Service and Dedication was presented toÂ
Rebecca Conway for her contributions to the team both on and off the water. A pillar of strength in the first varsity eight, Conway served as the co-captain this year for the Big Green and helped Dartmouth defeat Boston University, Cornell, and finish sixth in the Grand Final of the varsity eight at the Ivy League Championship.
Â
Rhea Enzian was given the Warren C. "Chuck" Nagle Jr. Award, which is given to the woman who perseveres toward the goal of giving her absolute best. Nagle walked on the lightweight men's team as a coxswain his freshman year at Dartmouth and went on to coach the women's team in the 80s. Sitting in the 7-seat of the varsity eight, Enzian helped Dartmouth take sixth overall at Ivies and won the Petite Final at the Eastern Sprints.
Â
Hannah Frater received the Parents Award, which is presented to the most improved member of the team. Frater worked her way up from the third varsity eight as a freshman to the second varsity eight this season, rowing in the 3-seat and capturing a win over Columbia in the Petite Final of the Ivy League Championship.
Â
The Martha Beattie '76 Award was given to the most outstanding freshman oarswoman,Â
Carter Nelson. Beattie recently retired as the vice president for Alumni Relations and, before that, had completed a 30-year career as a rowing coach, math teacher and volunteer leader for a range of charities and schools. Carter rowed in the 2-seat of the first varsity eight as the only freshman member of the boat, and helped Dartmouth take sixth at Ivies.
Â
Sophie Kwon received the Novice Award for spirit and ability given in the tradition of the 1978 Novice Crew. The coxswain of the second varsity four, Kwon led Dartmouth to a bronze medal finish in the Grand Final at the Eastern Sprints.
Â
The Richard (Dick) W. Grossman Coxswains' Award is presented to the coxswain whose unparalleled commitment to rowing has contributed most to the success of his or her boat and the squad as a whole. It is dedicated by the Lightweight Class of 2001 and is selected by the head coaches of the women's, lightweight and heavyweight teams. This year's award was presented toÂ
Katie Erdos for her exceptional coxing abilities and unmatched leadership in the varsity eight this season.
Â
The Laura Woodberry Jessiman '80 Award was established two years ago to be presented annually to the senior member of the Dartmouth rowing program who, despite never participating in the first varsity boat, exemplifies Laura's qualities of hard work, perseverance, positive attitude and leadership. The recipient of the award,Â
Natalie Knight, was selected by the head coaches of all three teams. Knight competed in the second varsity eight as well as the varsity four this season, helping the V4 finish just eight seconds behind Brown in the Ivy League Round Robin and fifth in the Grand Final at the Ivy League Championship.
Â
The coaching staff also announced that Erdos and Annie Blackburn will serve as co-captains for the 2019-20 season, as nominated by their teammates.
