LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Dartmouth heavyweight rowing team began its spring season in Vegas at the Lake Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday.
Â
Also competing in the event were California, Oregon State and San Diego.
"The weekend of racing was very productive for our group," said
Wyatt Allen, the Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "Racing three west coast teams with very little water time is a big challenge, and I thought our group approached it with a great mentality. Both line-ups improved every time they put their shells in the water."
Â
Dartmouth's Varsity won two of the three races it competed in. Dartmouth (5:48.8) defeated San Diego (6:09.1) for its first win of the day. The Big Green (5:47.7) then defeated Oregon State (5:58.9) and San Diego (6:07.5) in the final race of the day. Cal's crews defeated Dartmouth in the two early races.
Â
The Big Green's Second Varsity (5:53.3) won the 11:40 a.m. race ahead of San Diego (6:09.1). The second varsity (5:58.1) also defeated Oregon State (6:03.8).
"We left the weekend with a clear assessment of our speed and an understanding of where we need to improve," Allen continued. "The six freshmen on the trip experienced the intensity and quality of spring racing across the IRA field, an experience that will inform their training over the next four weeks and serve our line-ups well later this spring."
