Dribbling to D.C.
• Well, the team is flying for this game, but you get the idea. Dartmouth will be playing Georgetown for the third time ever and the first time in the nation's capital.
• The Big Green suffered a 73-57 loss to open the season at Boston College, but did outscore the Eagles in the second half, 38-31.
• Dartmouth struggled with its perimeter shooting all night, knocking down just 20.7 percent (6-of-29) from distance.
• Guards
Brendan Barry and
Taurus Samuels led the Green with 10 points apiece.
• Junior forward
Cam Krystkowiak, playing in his first collegiate game, provided nine points — all in the second half — in just 14 minutes.
• While the shooting touch was a bit off in the team's first game in over 20 months, the team did do a good job of protecting the basketball, turning it over just eight times.
• Head coach
David McLaughlin sent 13 of the 16 available players onto the court, eight of whom had fewer than 100 college minutes under their belt with five playing in their first college game.
• Dartmouth is now 78-42 all-time in season openers.
Series vs. Georgetown
• Dartmouth has squared off against the Hoyas just twice previously, splitting the two meetings with the most recent a 57-56 Big Green victory at the Kodak Classic held in Rochester 47 years ago in 1974.
• The first game was a lopsided affair at the same Christmas tournament eight years prior, a 101-69 Georgetown win.
• Against the current membership of the Big East, Dartmouth has quite a respectable 26-30 record all-time.
•
Brendan Barry has a connection to Georgetown as his grandfather, Jim Barry, was an All-American for the Hoyas and named to the program's All-Century team in 2007.
• The most frequent opponents from the conference have been Providence (9-7), St. John's (3-10), UConn (9-3) and Seton Hall (4-4).
Scouting the Hoyas
• Georgetown is playing its season opener against Dartmouth, making it the last Big East team to tip off the 2021-22 season.
• The Hoyas, which was 13-13 overall and 7-9 in the Big East last year before winning the conference tournament to earn a trip to the NCAAs, were picked to finish 10th in the 11-team league.
• There are two grad students on the roster — wing Kaiden Rice and guard Donald Carey — while the rest of the roster is made up of five freshmen, four sophomores and three juniors.
• Rice averaged 17.6 points a game last year, for The Citadel, while Carey is in his second season with the Hoyas, producing 8.0 points and 3.0 rebounds a game last year.
• One of those five freshmen, Aminu Mohammed, was named the Big East Preseason Freshman of the Year after being named the Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year for the second time.
• Georgetown is coached by NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing, who last year became the first person to win the Big East Tournament as a player and coach. The three-time first-team All-American is in his fifth season at the helm of the Hoyas with a 62-59 overall record and one NCAA Tournament appearance to his credit.
Season-Opening Defeat
Unlike the last Big Green season in 2019-20 when Dartmouth pulled off a 68-63 upset win at Buffalo in the season opener, it could not repeat that performance at Boston College this year, falling to the Eagles on Nov. 9, 73-57. The game marked the return of guard
Brendan Barry, who scored 10 points in his first game in a Dartmouth uniform in exactly 32 months (March 9, 2019). Barry missed the 2019-20 season with an injury and played for Temple as a grad student last year.
Krystkowiak Shows a Knack
A knack for what? Well, 'Krystkowiak' and 'knack' both start and end with a 'k' so we'll make it work.
Cam Krystkowiak, the son of former NBA player Larry Krystkowiak, showed a knack for scoring around the basket at BC, putting up nine points — all in the second half — in just 14 minutes of action. The 6-9 forward hit 4-of-6 field goals (two on two-hand dunks) and even grabbed three rebounds for good measure.
Youngsters Get a Taste
Entering the season, exactly half of the 20 players on the roster had never played in a college game. And exactly half of those 10 got their feet wet in the season opener at Boston College, including a junior in Krystkowiak, who sat out his freshman campaign with an injury. Joining him on the court for anywhere from 2-to-11 minutes were sophomores
Dusan Neskovic (8 minutes) and
Izaiah Robinson (2) along with freshmen
Ryan Cornish (11) and
Romeo Myrthil (6). Of those five, Krystkowiak (9 points), Myrthil (5) and Neskovic (3) recorded their first points.
Wade-ing in the Deep End
The deep end here is the top of the rim as junior
Garrison Wade provided the season's first dunk, throwing one down with authority late in the first half. As noted previously, Krystkowiak added two more dunks, starting the dunk-meter for the 2021-22 season at three. And yes, we've never kept a dunk-meter, but maybe we'll do just that this year. A quick check of the 2019-20 season turns up with 17 dunks — three by
Aaryn Rai and two by Wade — and not a single game with more than two all year.
