HANOVER, N.H. —The honors keep coming for the Big Green rowing team after an unusual spring season. The Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA) has announced the year-end specialty award winners along with coach and staff of the year awards.
The Division I Head Coach of the Year award goes to the Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Heavyweight Rowing Wyatt Allen. Allen led his varsity boats to two bronze and a silver medal at this spring's IRA championship. This award is given to the coach that demonstrates excellence in his or her ability to develop both individual and team performance while cultivating an environment that is built on fairness, respect, mentorship and upholding the values of the IRCA and men's collegiate rowing.
The Division I Staff of the Year goes to associate heavyweight coach Al Monte, assistant Jeff Monahan and boatman Michael Stafford. Monte finishes his seventh season with the team, three as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate in 2017. Monahan joined the staff in 2019 following a successful four years rowing at Columbia, winning the IRA National Championship in 2016. Stafford is on the board of the Upper Valley Rowing Foundation and a boatman for the Big Green since 2017.
The staff of the year award is nominated by the head coach of their institution. Qualifications are that they demonstrate excellence in coaching, recruiting, commitment to their program, student-athletes and head coach, while upholding the values of the IRCA and men's collegiate rowing.
