HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Princeton, 2-0, in ECAC Hockey and Ivy League action on Saturday evening at Thompson Arena.
Â
Dartmouth falls to 6-18-3, 5-13-2 while Princeton moves to 8-16-2, 7-11-1. The Big Green end Ivy league play with a 3-6-1 record while the Tigers are 5-3.
Â
Braiden Dorfman scored the winning goal that sent the tennis balls flying out onto the ice.
Sean Chisholm notched an empty net in the final seconds to seal the victory.
Â
Clay Stevenson earned his second shutout of the season with a 25-save performance.
Â
The Big Green had several opportunities to take the lead but could not find the back of the net. It was a back-and-forth affair with neither team finding the opener.
Â
Dartmouth had a great chance early in the second period on the power play when
Sean Chisholm found
Jeff Losurdo in front of goal, but his shot was saved by Princeton goaltender Aidan Porter.
Â
It was a defensive battle throughout the first two periods as Dartmouth held the shooting advantage, 19-18, in shots on goal. The Big Green defense blocked seven shots through the first 40 minutes.
Â
Things remained even until the final two minutes when Dartmouth used the momentum of home ice and the rowdy crowd at Thompson.
Â
Chisholm fired a shot towards goal and there was a loose puck around the front of the goal. Dorfman dove towards the puck to poke it in for the 1-0 lead and the opportunity to bring back the greatest tradition in college hockey: throwing tennis balls onto the ice after the first Dartmouth goal against Princeton.
Â
Chisholm sealed the victory with 30 seconds remaining when
Joey Musa sent him through for an empty net goal.
Â
The Big Green are now 3-1 in their last four games, picking up crucial points heading into the final weekend of play.
Â
Dartmouth hits the road next weekend to close out the regular season. The Big Green will play at RPI on Friday followed by Union on Saturday.
