NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team defeated Merrimack, 16-5, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Duane Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Dartmouth improves to 2-2 while Merrimack falls to 0-3.
"It was a great team win and we had a lot of players step up in different ways, including freshman
Katina Christensen scoring six goals and freshman
Gisele Todd having another big game in goal," said Josie Harper Head Coach of Women's Lacrosse
Alex Frank.
"It speaks to the leadership we have on this team," Frank continued. "
Lucy Murray and
Katie Elders had a big role in taking over the offense and helping the younger players while
Emma Macaione and
Nieve Donegan led on the defensive end to allow Gisele to play her best."
Katie Elders scored six goals while assisting on another to finish with seven points.
Katina Christensen also scored six goals for the Big Green.
Lucy Murray finished with one goal and four assists while
Jev Ward and
Mimi Lazore both had one goal and two assists.
Gisele Todd made five saves in goal. Dartmouth caused 10 turnovers, led by
Nieve Donegan's three.
The Big Green jumped out to an early 1-0 just 47 seconds into the game when
Katina Christensen scored her first of six goals.
Maja Desmond added to the lead with 3:56 to go in the first quarter. The Warriors cut into the deficit less than a minute later.
Dartmouth got off to a quick start in the second quarter as
Katie Elders scored 42 seconds in to make it a 3-1 lead. After Merrimack added another, the Big Green rattled off three straight goals, two from Christensen and one from Elders to end the first half.
The Big Green scored another three goals in third quarter before Merrimack stopped the scoring run. Christensen scored with four seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Christensen and Elders scored again just 17 seconds apart inside the opening 2:30 of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 12-3.
Lucy Murray got involved in the scoring a few minutes later. After the Warriors scored two, the Big Green scored another three to close things out with the goals coming from Elders (2) and
Mimi Lazore.
"We have a little bit of break as we head into finals week and we'll take the time to revamp and get ready for our next game," said Frank.
Dartmouth is off for 10 days until they host UMass in non-conference action on Friday, March 18 at Scully-Fahey Field. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
