HANOVER, N.H. – The field has been set for the119th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey, including the fourth-ranked heavyweights of Dartmouth. Racing will begin on Friday, June 3, and continue through Sunday, June 5. This year's championships will be co-hosted by the Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA).
The Big Green will race four boats in the heavyweight division —varsity, second and third varsity boats, as well as a varsity four with cox.
The championship kicks off at 8 a.m. on Friday with the Big Green V8 racing in the fifth heat at 8:40 a.m. Boats will then advance to the repechages and semifinals on Friday afternoon. Racing continues on Saturday and wraps up on Sunday with the grand and petite finals.
The Big Green's first V8 enters the national championship as the No. 4 ranked team in the nation in the latest poll, with California, Yale and Brown rounding out the top three spots. Last season, the boat was ranked 10th due to a pandemic-abbreviated season, yet the Big Green managed to bring home a silver and two bronze medals from the competition.
Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing
Wyatt Allen is looking forward to the culmination of the spring season. "The group has had a productive two-and-a-half weeks of training since the Eastern Sprints, and we are looking forward to a very competitive weekend of racing on Mercer Lake."
