WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The Dartmouth heavyweight rowing team completed the IRA Championship on Sunday with the second varsity eight earning a medal for a second straight year. Yale continued its domination, winning the James Ten Eyck Team Award while the Big Green finished fifth overall. California, Washington and Brown followed Yale in the top four spots.
The Big Green began the day with the third varsity competing for the Stewards Cup. Yale (5:54.771) and Harvard (5:57.717) jumped out to an early lead with the Bulldogs winning the title. Dartmouth and Washington battled in the race for third, and though the Big Green made up more than six seconds over the final 500 meters, the Huskies (6:03.639) held on to finish ahead of Dartmouth (6:06.689) and secure the bronze.
After a clean start in the race for the Kennedy Cup by the second varsity, Yale (5:51.958) once again proved they haven't lost anything since winning the Eastern Sprints. The Big Green were a clear second halfway down the course when California (5:54.052) put on a press and began to reel in the Dartmouth rowers. With 750 meter to go, the Golden Bears pulled in front, leaving the Green (5:57.286) to claim the bronze medal.
Rounding out the day, the varsity boat looked to prove that they belonged in the grand final by dominating the petite final, winning by almost three seconds. At the 750m mark, Dartmouth pulled away from Princeton and Northeastern. Not to be outdone, Northeastern put on a charge, passing Princeton and closing the gap on the Big Green. But stroke
William Bender from Norwich, Vermont, led his charges to victory. Dartmouth took the victory in 5:49.361, followed by Northeastern (5:52.257) and Princeton (5:59.435). Cornell, Navy and Wisconsin rounded out the rest of the boats.
In the V8 grand final, California outlasted Yale, defeating the Bulldogs by 2.1 seconds in 5:44.239.
Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing
Wyatt Allen summed up the weekend, "I'm extremely proud of this team and their performance this weekend. The entire group has worked hard and selflessly throughout the year. As a coach, it is gratifying to see them rewarded for it on the race course. Our 1V responded in the best way possible to the disappointment of not making the grand final with a convincing win in the petite final. The 2V, 3V and 4+ all put together good weekends of racing to be in the race for medals. Also want to say thanks to coaches
Al Monte and
John Graves for their incredible work this year."
