HENLEY-ON-THAMES, UK – Dartmouth heavyweight rowing traveled overseas to Henley-on-Thames, England, to compete in the Henley Royal Regatta this week.
The Big Green's first race in the Ladies' Challenge Plate was against a crew from the Netherlands. Despite a run-in with a flock of geese, the Big Green came out on top in that race and moved on to the Plate semi-finals on Saturday where they fell to a tough Cal Berkley team.
In 2011, while serving as the freshman coach and recruiting coordinator at California Berkeley current Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing Wyatt Allan led the Golden Bears to an undefeated season, claiming the Temple Challenge Cup.
Established in 1839, the Henley Royal Regatta is one of the oldest and most prestigious regattas in the world, drawing thousands of fans and hundreds of crews from across the globe each year. It takes place in the small British town of Henley-on-Thames situated on the River Thames about an hour outside of London.
The race course is 2,112-meters, slightly longer than the standard 2000-meter courses that the Big Green have rowed throughout the season. Each crew will face a knockout competition, racing over five days from Wednesday to Sunday, or until the crew is defeated.
The last time Dartmouth rowed at Henley was in 2017. The Big Green was defeated by Germany's RTHC Bayer Leverkusen in the first round of the Ladies' Challenge Plate.
