HANOVER, N.H. — The World Rowing U23 Championships wrapped up at the end of July, and the United States Men's Eight, featuring Dartmouth brothers Jacob and
Miles Hudgins, wrapped up the event by earning a silver medal.
After placing second in its first heat, the U.S. won its repechage by nearly four full seconds to advance to the A Final. Australia jumped out to an early lead with a fast start, but Great Britain was determined to defend its title. The British moved back out front with the USA challenging both before moving past the Australian boat. The Americans fell just short of Great Britain but edged the Aussies to take second place.
The finish was tight with Great Britain crossing the tape in 5:51.71, followed by the U.S. in 5:53.97 with Australia rounding out the top three in 5:54.90. Seven of the rowers in the boat represented the Ivy League with four from Brown, another from Cornell and the Hudgins brothers.
The Big Green were also represented at the championships by a pair of recent graduates —
Isaac Spokes and Cooper Tuckerman — rowing in the men's quadruple scull. A former novice walk-on for Dartmouth, Spokes stroked the U.S. entry and Tuckerman sat in the bow seat, helping the boat to a fifth-place finish in the B Final to close out in 11th overall.
"This was a solid result given the U.S. historical finishes in the quad, which is notoriously one of the toughest events at the World Championship," said the Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing
Wyatt Allen, who was the U23 National Team Director at the championship.
Rising sophomore
Julian Thomas served as a spare for the US sculling squad.
