CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — It was a strong weekend for the Dartmouth women's rowing team at the Head of the Charles, highlighted by the Big Green taking home silver in the women's club eights. Dartmouth also finished fifth and sixth in the club fours and championship fours, respectively, capping off a strong first regatta as Big Green head coach for John Graves.
"The Head of the Charles is a really cool race for our sport," said Graves. "It's not a straight line, there's a lot of steering involved and there are a lot of other variables involved. I thought our team in all three events handled it really well and did a good job of embracing what's unique about the regatta, really having fun on the course and embracing that uncertainty. They did a really good job of showing up, regardless of what was thrown at them. That's what I was most proud of."
The weekend began on Saturday with Dartmouth finishing fifth in the club fours with a time of 18:20.506. The Big Green were less than seven seconds behind Penn in third place.
Also on Saturday, Dartmouth put forth a second-place finish in the club eights with a time of 16:29.937. The Big Green only trailed Yale and were more than 13 seconds clear of the fourth-place crew. It marked Dartmouth's first medal at the Head of the Charles since 2018 and just second in over a decade.
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday with the championship fours, as the Big Green came in sixth out of 22 crews with a time of 19:02.967. Among the crews Dartmouth finished ahead of was Penn in 15th and Cornell in 16th.
"With the Head of the Charles, sometimes you can get the steering wrong or miss a turn and you have a result that's not characteristic of your speed," said Graves. "But I was excited that from the coxswain to the rowers, we put down a solid effort.
"Ultimately, our goals are in the spring," Graves continued. "We don't want to get too caught up in the results either way, but we're proud of the team for how they've bought into the new direction and they feel like they're making progress."
The Big Green return to action on Saturday with the Gardner Cup before heading to Princeton for the Princeton Chase the following weekend.
"We're five weeks in of a new coaching staff and it certainly feels like in practice, we're making progress," said Graves. "We're definitely still a long way off where we're aiming to be, but this weekend was a good data point that we're moving in the right direction."
