HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team held a 4-3 lead going into the third period, But Penn State outscored the Big Green 3-1 in the final 20 minutes to claim a 6-5 victory in non-conference action on Friday evening at Thompson Arena. Penn State scored the game-winning goal with just 14 seconds remaining until overtime.
The Big Green fall to 2-8-1 on the season while the Nittany Lions improve to 7-7-1.
"I'm really proud of our effort. I thought for the first time in a bit we believed, we played with passion, we played really hard and played our style of hockey," said head coach
Liz Keady Norton. "It's a heartbreaker, but I give credit to our team and some of our players had the best game they've played all year and I'm excited about the progress there."
It was a back-and-forth contest over the final few minutes of play. As the clock ran down and overtime on the horizon, Penn State capitalized on a turnover from Dartmouth in its own defensive zone. Some quick passes around the crease gave Mya Vaslet the opening to put home the winner with 14 seconds left.
The Nittany Lions twice overturned a one-goal deficit over the course of the final 20 minutes. They equalized early in the third to make it a 4-4 game.
Lauren Messier had given the Big Green the lead 6:22 into the final frame after smashing home a shot off a rebound from a saved shot attempt by
Shae Messner.
Tessa Janecke scored 15 seconds into a power play midway through the period to tie the game at 5-5.
Dartmouth outscored Penn State two goals to one in the middle frame, with one being a short-handed goal and the other on the power play.
Sophie Robinson tallied the short-handed goal, her first tally of the season, early in the period. It was the Big Green's first short-handed goal since Nov. 6, 2021. Robinson won the race to the puck down along the boards, and playing it towards net and the puck found its way into the net.
Tiffany Hill scored on the power play for her first goal of the year, following up on a loose puck outside the crease.
Both teams scored twice in the opening period, with Penn State taking the initial lead just 2:28 into the contest.
Dartmouth immediately responded when
Laura Fuoco evened the score just over a minute later with her second goal of the season.
Maura Fiorenza picked up her first point of the year with the secondary assist while
Jenna Donohue recorded her team-high eighth assist with a fancy pass to send Fuoco towards the net.
The Big Green took their first lead of the night when
Hamilton Doster tallied her second goal of the year at the 13:00 mark. Doster dove towards a loose puck, just getting the end of her stick on it to push it into the back of the net.
The Nittany Lions equalized minutes later through Maggie MacEachern.
Eleanor Rogers made a career-high 39 saves between the pipes for the Big Green. Josie Bothun and Annie Spring combined to make 22 saves for the Nittany Lions.
Dartmouth and Penn State square off again tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
