BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont scored seven goals in the third quarter to take a 13-11 victory over the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team on Tuesday evening at Virtue Field in the non-conference finale for both teams. The Big Green move to 5-8 for the season while Vermont improves to 6-7.
Samantha Bennett finished with a hat-trick for the Big Green.
Katina Christensen had three points with two goals and one assist.
Katie Elders and
Lucy Murray each scored twice while
Catherine Erb and
Maja Desmond both had one goal.
Julia Mastrio had three ground balls and two caused turnovers and
Nieve Donegan also finished with two caused turnovers along with two ground balls.
Gisele Todd made eight saves in goal.
Ava Vasile and Jane Trauger each finished with a hat-trick for the Catamounts. Vasile also chipped in an assist along with seven draw controls, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Ciera Licare, Maddie Erskine, and Kendall Traveis all scored two goals for Vermont.
Dartmouth wasted no time getting on the board as Murray scored just 29 seconds into the game. In the opening possession for the Big Green, a free position shot from Elders went over the goal, but Murray snagged it out of the air before running around the front of goal and firing it home to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
Christensen added to the lead shortly after with her 26
th goal of the season. After nearly seven minutes of scoreless play, Christensen tallied her second of the night at the 6:14 mark to put Dartmouth up 3-0.
Maja Desmond scored from the free position with just over four minutes remaining in the opening quarter to push the lead to four.
The Big Green held the Catamounts scoreless until midway through the second quarter. McKenzie Ballard dumped it inside to Traveis for the quick shot to get Vermont on the board with 7:03 remaining in the first half. The Catamounts cut into the deficit once again just a minute later through a goal from Vasile.
A goal from Erb at the 3:06 mark to push the lead back to three before Vermont added a goal with under 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter to cut the Big Green lead to two going into halftime.
The Catamounts scored six goals in the first 5:22 of the third quarter to take a 9-5 lead.
Bennett got on the board to stop the Big Green scoring after spinning her way in front of goal and tucking it home for her 13
th goal of the year. Vermont pushed the lead back to four less than a minute later.
Elders opened her scoring account for the night with under three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Elders zipped her way through the Vermont defense and fired a shot into the back of the net.
Elders scored a laser from the free position shortly into the fourth quarter to bring the Big Green back within two.
Bennett scored a woman-up at the 11:20 mark after the Catamounts were given a green card. Bennett caught the ball behind the net, spun past her defender and picked out the top corner from a tough angle.
Bennett completed the hat-trick moments later. She made the move past the Catamount defender and ripped the shot inside the right side of the net.
After both teams scored just 1:31 apart, and now just a one-goal game, Vermont scored the insurance goal with seven seconds on the clock to take the win.
Dartmouth returns to the confines of Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday for its final home game of the season as the Big Green take on the Princeton Tigers. Opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
