HANOVER, N.H. – Katie Elders scored three goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-tying and go-ahead goals, to lead the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 victory over No. 24 Princeton in Ivy League action on Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. With the win, the Big Green improve to 6-8, 3-3 for the season while Princeton moves to 6-8, 3-3.
Katina Christensen and Elders both finished with four goals each for the Big Green.
Lucy Murray and
Boo Dewitt each finished with four points as Murray scored a hat-trick and had one assist while Dewitt scored two and assisted two.
Rosie McCarthy finished with five draw controls and
Isabella Godsick had four.
Gisele Todd was stellar in the Dartmouth goal, making 12 saves and scooping four ground balls.
Kari Buonanno led all scorers with five goals for the Tigers. Nina Montes tallied four points after scoring a hat-trick and providing one assist. Amelia Hughes made nine saves on the afternoon.
The Big Green opened the scoring just 1:06 in the contest when Murray scored her first of the afternoon. Dartmouth tallied the next three goals to take a commanding 4-0 lead. The Tigers got on the board with 2:33 remaining in the opening quarter when Buonanno scored her first of the game to cut into the deficit. Dewitt scored shortly after before and another Princeton goal, this time from Montes, to make it a 5-2 Dartmouth lead going into the second quarter.
The Tigers controlled the second quarter as they outscored the Big Green, 6-0, including two goals from Kate Mulham and two woman-up goals, to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Christensen started to cut into the deficit right out of the gate after halftime, scoring at the 13:59 mark to spark the comeback effort.
Princeton scored the next two goals to push the lead to four, its highest of the game.
Dartmouth rattled off the next three goals, a woman-up goal from Elders followed by goals from Erb and Murray to bring the Big Green back within one, facing a 10-9 deficit.
Grace Tauckus scored two goals just 36 seconds apart to push the Princeton lead back to three with 5:11 to go in the third quarter.
Unassisted goals from Christensen and Dewitt before the end of the third quarter brought the Big Green within one going into the final quarter.
Elders tallied her second goal of the afternoon at the 13:47 mark of the fourth quarter to tie the game. She scored again just 1:12 later to put the Big Green ahead, 13-12.
Christensen pushed the lead up to two with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest with her fourth goal of the day.
Buonanno scored for the Tigers to cut the Dartmouth lead to one, but a goal from Elders, assisted by Murray, two minutes later gave the Big Green some cushion.
Buonanno scored her game-high fifth goal, a woman-up goal, to make it a one-goal game with 2:13 remaining.
The Tigers had a woman-up advantage for most of the final two minutes, but Todd and the Big Green fended off the Princeton attack to hang on for the win. Todd made two crucial saves from free position shots in the final moments to pick up her fifth win of the season.
The Big Green held an 18-14 advantage on draw controls.
Dartmouth closes out the regular season next Saturday with a trip to No. 15 Penn. Opening draw at Penn Park is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
Notes: Catherine Erb becomes the first Big Green freshman to score 30+ goals in a season since Kat Collins '11 scored 34 in the 2008 season… Today's win is the Big Green's first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
