Three Big Green crews advanced to petite finals

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Dartmouth women's rowing team competed against some of the best crews in the East on Sunday and enjoyed mixed results, with three crews advancing to petite finals, including the Third Varsity Eight coming out victorious in its final. Two other crews also won their third-level finals. As a team, the Big Green finished 11th out of 18 crews.

The Varsity Eight finished fifth in its heat in an ultra-competitive race. The Big Green finished in 6:37.990, less than a second behind third-place Temple (6:37.010) and fourth-place URI (6:37.150). The Varsity Eight went on to finish in 6:36.710 in its third-level final, beating Michigan State (6:37.390), Cornell (6:41.820), Boston College (6:42.810), Marist (6:50.470) and Colgate (6:56.590).

"In the Varsity Eight morning heats, we were leading by half a deck with 300 meters to go, but we unfortunately just lost the sprint," said Dartmouth head coach Nancy LaRocque. "To qualify for the B final, we had to get third or fourth, which we were gunning for. But they learned from it and how to tweak their sprint for the next race.

"Week-to -week, their racing is getting stronger and they're racing better," LaRocque continued. "That's all we can hope for."

The Big Green's Third Varsity Eight went on to win its petite final, posting a time of 6:56.320, ahead of Drexel (7:00.860), BU (7:04.370), Cornell (7:06.990), Temple (7:31.540) and UMass (7:37.330).

"The third varsity won by open water," said LaRocque. "That boat was led by senior Allison Smith."

The Second Varsity Eight came in third of its petite final with a time of 6:45.310. The Varsity Four also advanced to its petite final and the Second Varsity Four won its third-level final over Colgate.

"The second varsity had a really good morning of racing, really strong results for that boat," said LaRocque.

Dartmouth will return to action in two Sundays at the Ivy League Championships at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.

"We're looking forward to increasing the speed across all boats over the next two weeks to hit Ivies as fast as possible," said LaRocque.
