Dartmouth’s Third, Fourth and Fifth Varsity Eight boats all walked away with medals Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. – One year after the Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team exploded onto the scene with five medals at Eastern Sprints, the Big Green added three more on Sunday, highlighted by the Fifth Varsity Eight capturing gold for a second straight season. Dartmouth's Fourth Varsity Eight finished second while the Third Varsity Eight came in third.

"To put all five of our crews in the grand finals and to have three crews coming home with medals, it was a great team day," said Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "We're excited to get home and back on the water to find some more speed leading up to IRAs in three weeks."

After a morning that saw every boat that took to the water qualify for grand finals, the Fifth Varsity Eight got the afternoon started with the crew's first race of the day. The Big Green's time of 5:40.079 edged Yale (5:41.907) and Harvard (5:43.635) to take home gold.

The Fourth Varsity Eight followed with a time of 5:45.720, just over a second behind Harvard (5:44.558) and less than two seconds ahead of Syracuse in third (5:47.486).

Not long after, it was the Third Varsity Eight's turn to capture a medal, taking third. The Big Green's time of 5:41.426 was just behind Yale (5:37.222) and Brown (5:39.462) and ahead of Harvard (5:42.292).

The Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eights both found themselves in tight grand finals. The V8 finished in fifth (5:28.673) in a race that say first and sixth finish within six seconds of each other. The 2V's time of 5:39.288 was sixth, but similarly less than six seconds behind Harvard in first (5:33.550).

Next up for the Big Green is the IRA National Regatta June 2-4 in Mercer County, New Jersey.
