HANOVER, N.H. —
Wyatt Allen, the Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing, announced on Tuesday the additions of 2018 Dartmouth alumna Sabrina Bohrer and Jack Smith to his staff as assistant coaches. Both come to Hanover with extensive rowing and coaching experience, Bohrer most recently coaching with the Harvard Radcliffe women's rowing program and Smith with the national champion Cal men's rowing program.
"Wyatt has been a mentor of mine since my time as an athlete here, and I know working alongside him and the rest of the staff will provide many opportunities for growth," said Bohrer. "I look forward to getting back on the Connecticut River with this team of hard-working individuals. Thank you, Wyatt and Dartmouth Athletics for this opportunity."
Bohrer was a standout rower for the Big Green women's program, as a four-year member of the Varsity Eight. As a senior, she was named first team All-Ivy and Academic All-Ivy. Bohrer was a recipient of the Thaddeus Seymour Award for the student-athlete with the greatest contribution to Dartmouth Rowing, as the first woman in more than 60 years to receive the award. In her time, she also received the Julia H. Geer Award (for the most significant contribution to the team), Season of 1979 Women's Cup (for service and dedication to Dartmouth Rowing) and Martha Beattie '76 (for most outstanding freshman oarswoman).
After graduation, Bohrer served as assistant women's rowing coach at Dartmouth for the 2018-19 season. She helped the Big Green to a runner-up finish at Eastern Sprints, third-place finish at the Head of the Charles and fifth-place finish at the Ivy League Championships. Bohrer coached a pair of All-Ivy honorees and nine CRCA Scholar-Athletes.
Following her season as Dartmouth assistant coach, Bohrer went onto Harvard women's rowing where she led recruiting efforts, bringing in talented student-athletes from around the world. She coached the varsity fours to multiple top-3 finishes at Eastern Sprints and a second-place finish at the Head of the Charles. Bohrer also currently serves as a board member for the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
Bohrer is USRowing level two certified. During her time as a student-athlete, she delved into coaching at Community Rowing, Inc. in Brighton, Massachusetts, developing lesson plans for middle school athletes with no prior rowing experience. She later volunteered at Saint Ignatius Preparatory School in San Francisco, California. Bohrer went on to garner coaching experience at the Bachelors Barge Club in Philadelphia, the USRowing Olympic Development Camp in Saratoga, New York, Evergreen Rowing Camp at Dartmouth and Cambridge Boat Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
"I'm thrilled to welcome Sabrina back to Dartmouth as a member of the heavyweight rowing staff," said Allen. "I've had the opportunity to watch Sabrina's drive and leadership as an undergrad at Dartmouth, and I've admired her work as a coach and recruiter both at Dartmouth and Harvard Radcliffe on the women's side the past four years. Her work ethic, passion for the sport and competitive nature are second to none, and I know she will be an incredible mentor, role model, and coach for our student-athletes. I can't wait to see the positive impact she has on our student-athletes and the program moving forward."
A 2016 graduate of St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, Smith has served as volunteer assistant coach with Cal men's rowing since June of 2021. In his tenure at Berkeley, Smith was heavily involved in all aspects of the program's operation, including practices, competitions, coordinating travel and more. He also facilitated and organized the Ky Ebright Invitational regatta in 2022 and 2023, a five-team regatta out of the UC Berkeley boathouse with participants from over 500 miles away.
On the water, the Cal crews were incredibly successful over Smith's two seasons, winning the 2023 IRA National Championship, the Varsity Eight at the 2022 IRA National Championship and the Pac-12 Team Championship each of those years. Smith helped coach Cal's Varsity Four to the 2023 national title, and coached the boat to back-to-back conference championships.
"I couldn't be more excited to join the Dartmouth rowing staff," said Smith. "The team is at a very exciting time in its rich history, and I feel that Wyatt, John (Graves) and Richie (Santry) did a great job to build positive momentum for the upcoming school year. I'm grateful to Wyatt for the opportunity and can't wait to get started with our student-athletes soon."
While Smith was volunteer assistant with Cal, he also served as fundraising and financial director for Friends of California Crew at the California Rowing Club. Smith helped fundraise for Cal's general budget and for two new scholarships. From November, 2020 to May, 2021, he also served as assistant to the newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer with USRowing.
As a student-athlete, Smith rowed at Cal for four years, graduating in 2020 and contributing to three consecutive top-four team point finishes at the IRA National Championship (the 2020 championships weren't contested due to the COVID-19 pandemic). All the while, Smith began generating valuable coaching experience, serving as assistant or associate head coach within different programs at Community Rowing, Inc. in Brighton, Massachusetts.
"There was an incredible groundswell of support and positive recommendations for Jack from the very beginning of our search, which speaks directly to the impact Jack has had on the coaching staffs, student-athletes and former teammates he has worked with," said Allen. "He clearly has an ability and desire to make those around him better. These qualities, along with how great of a fit he is for our team and its culture, were evident when he visited campus. Jack's experience rowing for four years and coaching for two at one of the best collegiate programs has given him a clear understanding of what it takes to compete and win at the highest level in our sport. His perspective will be a valuable addition to our coaching staff."
Bohrer and Smith enter a men's heavyweight rowing program that finished seventh at the 2023 IRA National Championship. The Varsity Four captured bronze, the Big Green's third straight season with at least one medal at IRAs. Prior to 2021, it had been over a decade since Dartmouth had qualified a boat for the grand finals at IRAs, nevermind medaling. Among numerous postseason awards, Billy Bender and
Jacob Hudgins were named All-Americans, and both are set to return in 2023-24.
