HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Women's Rowing this past weekend in a big way, as more than 200 alumnae returned to campus, with all three Big Green rowing programs (women's, men's heavyweight and men's lightweight) taking part in the Gardner Cup.
"It was an extremely special weekend celebrating five decades of Dartmouth women's rowing," said women's head coach
John Graves. "I was very happy that our current team could feel such support from the women who came before them.
"We really enjoyed having the Radcliffe (Harvard) lightweights up in Hanover for the racing and they certainly provided some great competition for our crews," Graves continued. "This racing will be what we draw upon in a couple weeks down at the Head of the Charles."
Saturday's racing went into the books as a scrimmage, but it was a valuable opportunity to compete against someone other than Dartmouth.
While the women welcomed the Harvard lightweights, the Big Green men's heavyweight team hosted Boston University.
"Our racing against BU gave us both a good benchmark of where we are currently and exposed some things we need to work on," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "That being said, racing alongside our women and lightweights, both of whom had successful days on our river, was a great way to kick off the 2024-25 racing season."
Saturday was a unique regatta which saw alums as spectators in a nearby train following the race. Also racing was the Dartmouth men's lightweight team against Division III National Champion Wesleyan.
"We had a strong showing, particularly in the varsity, and are excited to continue to build speed as we prepare for the Head of the Charles," said head coach
Trevor Michelson. "Celebrating 50 years of women's rowing at Dartmouth made the weekend all the more memorable. With nearly 300 spectators watching from the train, and what felt like twice that on the bridge and dock as our crews came barreling down the course, showed the powerful impact that Dartmouth women's rowing has had on our boathouse.
"It was a day I will not soon forget."
Allen echoed those sentiments.
"It was a special and inspiring weekend for us to be a part of," he said.
Along with the racing, the weekend featured a special dinner on Saturday evening at the Hanover Inn, a breakfast the next morning along with alumna getting into boats to race.
"I was so satisfied the way the weekend turned out," said Trina Santry '80, "We thought maybe we'd get 50 or 70 people and we ended up with 250. Huge successful weekend mostly because so many different classes came. Different people reconnecting with each other was really exciting to see."
"It's been incredible being back," said Lauren Taggart Wasson '00, "I met my husband at Dartmouth at the boathouse, so he's here with our two daughters who are also having an amazing time, meeting all of my former teammates, seeing the generations of women's rowing and appreciating the spirit of the boathouse."
That spirit was front and center last weekend.
