CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team enjoyed tremendous success at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend. In the world's largest three-day regatta, the Big Green were victorious in a pair of events, while finishing third and sixth in the others.
The Head of the Charles is a three-mile, 4,800 meter course which features a number of turns. It is completed in a time trial format.
"I thought it was a really good team performance over the weekend," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "The group has been working hard this fall, and they've come together in a really nice way as a team. The group has made strides culturally and it showed in the results."
On Saturday, the Big Green finished first in the Men's Club Fours with a time of 16:19.547. They were nearly 18 seconds faster than any other crew.
Dartmouth went on to capture gold in the Men's Club Eights as well, posting a time of 14:18.752, which was just over 18 seconds ahead of Riverside in second place.
"I'm really proud of the club four winning by a big margin," said Allen. "The club eight rowed really well; it was great to see those guys win their event as well."
Sunday saw the Big Green place sixth in the Men's Championship Fours (16:04.765) and third in the Men's Championship Eights (13:55.261). In the eights, Dartmouth was the second collegiate crew to finish, while also finishing ahead of defending national champion Washington.
"I think that's the deepest field I've seen in the Championship Eights in a long time," said Allen. "There were a lot of international crews, there were a lot of Paris Olympians throughout the event, so for our guys to finish top three overall as the second collegiate crew was very cool. And I thought our championship four did a really good job. Sixth overall, and the fourth collegiate crew. Those guys rowed their best piece so far in the fall."
Dartmouth closes out its fall season on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Cornell Fall Invite.
"The Head of the Charles is interesting because all the different college programs get different entries in different events," said Allen. "All you can do is build the fastest crews you can for each of those events and race the teams you are up against. I thought coaches
Sabrina Bohrer and
Jack Smith did a great job of selecting and prepping their crews in a very short period of time, and the performances across the board bode well for the spring."
