LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Katie Elders scored five goals while
Katina Christensen netted her first hat trick of the year to lead the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team to a 15-8 victory over Siena in non-conference action on Wednesday at Hickey Field.
Dartmouth improves to 1-1 while Siena falls to 1-2.
"Knowing how scrappy and aggressive Siena is, we knew we had to math their grit. Our players did a good job of competing in every play and working together to find success," said
Alex McFadden, the Josie Harper Head Coach of Women's Lacrosse. "Credit to the defense for sticking to the game plan and coming up with big stops towards the end of the game."
Joining in on the scoring with Elders and Christensen were
Fiona O'Keeffe,
Catherine Erb,
Lucy Murray,
Mia Puccio and
Annie Small.
Ellie Burdick had one assist while Murray, O'Keeffe and Puccio all had an assist to their credit as well.
On the defensive side of things, the Big Green combined for eight caused turnovers, led by two from Elders. Dartmouth also finished with 21 ground balls, including five from
Gisele Todd, who made eight saves to earn her first win of the season.
Heading into the fourth quarter with a 9-6 lead, the Big Green outscored the Saints, 6-2, over the final 15 minutes of the game. The first six goals of the quarter belonged to Dartmouth, including three from Elders along with one each from O'Keeffe, Murray and Christensen.
The third quarter was even by a score of 2-2. Small opened the scoring early in the frame with her first collegiate goal.
The Big Green tallied five goals in the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead at halftime. Siena took a 3-2 lead, but the Big Green responded with three-straight goals from
Katie Elders and
Catherine Erb to take back the lead. The Saints scored midway through the quarter to get within one, but Dartmouth scored twice in the final two minutes, including one in the final 10 seconds, to make it a three-goal game.
Both teams were able to find the back of the net twice during the opening 15 minutes of play.
Katina Christensen had given the Big Green a lead on two occasions, but the Saints responded twice to tie the game.
McFadden finished by saying, "We still have a lot of work to do and look forward to getting better as we prepare for our next matchup against Vermont."
Dartmouth opens the home slate on Tuesday evening with a non-conference contest against twin-state rival Vermont. Opening draw is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
