PRINCETON, N.J. – Luke Haymes scored his first career hat trick to lead the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Princeton in ECAC Hockey and Ivy League action on Friday evening at Hobey Baker Rink.
Matt Fusco tallied his first collegiate goal while
Tucker McRae also lit the lamp for the Big Green.
Cooper Black made 26 saves to record his sixth win of the year.
Dartmouth improves to 6-8-7, 4-5-5 while Princeton falls to 7-12-2, 5-8-1.
"I thought our penalty kill was excellent, to kill those two five-minute majors in the third against Princeton, who has the second-best power play in the country, was really huge for us," said
Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey. "Thought we stuck together in the second and third, and I'm really happy with how we played."
Fusco opened the scoring late in the first period to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead. After intercepting a pass in the neutral zone, Fusco skated his way through the Princeton defense towards goal and fired his shot past Tigers goaltender Ethan Pearson.
Haymes tallied his first of the night with under a minute remaining in the opening period, scoring the Big Green's 14
th power play goal of the season.
McRae extended the lead to three late in the second period when his shot from the point sailed through several players in front of goal into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Princeton scored its lone goal of the night with 1:40 remaining in the middle frame to cut the Big Green lead down to two.
Dartmouth didn't waste much time getting the lead back to three as Haymes scored three minutes into the third period. During a stretch of 4v4,
CJ Foley quickly pushed a loose puck forward to send Haymes in for the breakaway. Haymes made no mistake from close range to give the Big Green their fourth goal of the night.
Haymes capped the scoring later in the third to complete the hat trick, once again scoring from close range.
Special teams was crucial for the Big Green tonight, scoring once on the power play and killing off two major penalties in the third.
Speaking about the hat trick, Haymes said, "My linemates set me up well. There were a couple good passes that sprung me out for breakaways."
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow evening for ECAC Hockey contest at No. 7 Quinnipiac. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
Notes: Luke Haymes is the first Dartmouth player to score a hat trick since Drew O'Connor scored three goals against Union on Feb. 28, 2020… Haymes now has seven goals in his last four games.
