PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 20 Penn in its Ivy League opener on Saturday, falling 17-7 at Franklin Field.
The Quakers wasted no time, scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the game. Lauren Riley quickly responded with a goal assisted by Annie Small to keep the lead within reach. In the last minute and a half of the first, Penn's Gracie Smith scored a goal to extend their lead.
Charlotte Myers opened the second quarter with a goal, keeping the Big Green neck and neck with Penn. The Quakers immediately retaliated, scoring three back-to-back goals in just over a minute. Following a timeout, Catherine Erb and Ryan Hapgood each scored a goal to enter halftime with a three-point deficit.
Penn opened the second half by scoring three goals, while Riley returned the favor with her second goal of the afternoon. After the Quakers extended their lead by two, Hapgood chipped at the deficit by scoring a man-up goal. Penn went on a 5-0 run entering the fourth quarter, broken up by Myers's second goal of the evening, which brought the final score to 17-7.
In addition to their two goals, Myers had two assists, while Riley and Hapgood each had one.
The Big Green will return home at 1 p.m. next Saturday to host Harvard.
