LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – On Wednesday, the baseball team played its first of four straight games in New York state with a nonconference matchup against the Siena Saints.
Despite falling behind early, the offense clicked when the Big Green needed it most, as Dartmouth plated three in the ninth inning to defeat Siena, 9-8.
Siena was pressuring in the first inning, knocking a double and a single to put two runners on with no outs. Big Green shortstop
Elliot Krewson eliminated the pressure, making a diving grab to double off the Saints, leaving only one runner on third base. He would come around to score on a wild pitch, but Krewson helped the Big Gren get out of the inning only down one.
Dartmouth loaded the bases in the second but weren't able to push the tying run home until the third.
Taer Rodriguez led off the inning with a walk, forcing a Saints pitching change.
A.J. DeMastrie and Krewson each took their free bases on a hit by pitch and a seven pitch walk to load the bases with Big Green.
The Saints were able to get two outs, but a throwing error allowed Rodriguez to score from third and tie the game at one.
Siena wasted no time responding, adding three runs on three hits in their half of the third inning.
Offense kept rolling as Dartmouth pulled within one in the top of the fourth. Another hit by pitch, a single, and a walk loaded the bases for Krewson who ripped a single up the middle to score two runs, making it a 4-3 game.
In the fifth, the Big Green pulled even. With two outs,
Stefan Di Corrado knocked his first collegiate extra base hit, a triple to right center field, putting the tying run in scoring position with two outs. A wild pitch sent him home to tie the game at four runs apiece.
The Saints once again wasted no time, scoring two runs to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Siena knocked two hits, a single and a double, and collected two free passes, a walk and a hit by pitch, in the inning.
Siena added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, adding its seventh run on a wild pitch.
In the final third of the game, Dartmouth got to work. They began the seventh inning with a walk, single, and fielder's choice but an error by the Saints pitcher made the bases loaded with no outs. Di Corrado then collected his first collegiate RBI when he knocked an infield single to cut into Siena's lead. Rodgriguez then drew a six-pitch walk to score another Big Green run and pull Dartmouth within one.
Siena thought they had done enough by adding another insurance run in the eighth, but mental mistakes in the ninth gave the Big Green life.
With one out,
Camden Rush came to the plate as a pinch hitter. The sophomore, who had a breakout series two weekends ago versus Harvard, continued his hot streak, knocking a single to center field on only the second pitch he saw.
Di Corrado then reached on an error before Rodriguez singled to right center field to score Rush. A bobble by the outfielder allowed Riess to score, tying the game for the Big Green. DeMastrie then singled down the first base line and Rodriguez came home to score, giving Dartmouth its first lead of the game.
The Saints got a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, but
Aidan Plummer got the next three batters out to seal the victory for Dartmouth.
Andrew Lombana got his third straight midweek start for the Big Green, allowing four runs on six hits in three innings. He also dealt one walk and fanned one.
Trey Sejnoha threw the next two innings, giving up two runs on two hits. He did strike out three batters, one short of his season high.
Matt Carey threw the next two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Jeff Lee followed, earning his second win of the season. He allowed one run on one hit in one inning of relief. He also fanned two.
Aidan Plummer closed out the midweek and earned the save, throwing a scoreless and hitless one inning of work.
The Big Green will return to action this weekend, traveling to Columbia for a three game Ivy League series. The two teams are set to play a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday. All three games can be streamed on ESPN+ or followed via live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
