BoxscoreHANOVER, N.H. - Senior
Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) scored four goals and one assist for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team, but No. 3 Maryland led from start to finish, taking a 13-7 victory on Friday afternoon.
The game originally was scheduled for a 2:30 start Saturday afternoon as nightcap of a lacrosse doubleheader, but was moved up a day because of predictions of a snowstorm.
The Terrapins (6-1) scored five goals in the first 18 minutes and held a 6-3 lead at halftime. Dana Dobbie scored three of her seven in the first 30 minutes of play.
In the second half, the ninth-ranked Big Green got within two goals, 7-5, when Douthett netted a free position shot with 22:07 to play.
Dobbie and Douthett traded goals about three minutes apart, making it 8-6 in favor of Maryland with 13:39 remaining.
The Terrapins then had another goal by Dobbie and two more 17 seconds apart, taking control, 11-6.
Maryland's high-octane offense only outshot Dartmouth, 36-31, but turnovers hurt the Big Green. Also scoring for the Big Green was sophomore
Katherine Chiusano (Medford, N.J.) with a pair of goals while junior
Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) had one.
"Maryland's a very strong team," said Dartmouth coach
Amy Patton, "and that first 10 minutes of the game - when we had four or five turnovers in a row and they capitalized - I thought we let them set the tone for the game. Maryland took advantage of that."
She added, "I thought it was great to see how we responded. If you are trying to find some silver linings in the game, I thought our defense played pretty well.
"We just need to move forward from this," said Patton, whose Big Green are now on the road for three straight games, beginning Tuesday at No. 5 James Madison. The Ivy League season opens March 24 at No. 18 Yale and continues the following day at Columbia.
In the nets, Dartmouth freshman
Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) made 13 saves before freshman
Chelsea Kirk (Hunt Valley, Md.) came on in relief, making two saves in the final 5:17. For Maryland, Allie Buote made nine stops.
