HANOVER, N.H. – The No. 5 Princeton women's lacrosse team came away from Saturday's Ivy League contest at Scully-Fahey Field with an 18-8 win against Dartmouth.
The conference home opener for the Big Green (4-3, 0-2 Ivy), Saturday's game slipped away in the opening half as the fifth-ranked Tigers (6-1, 2-0 Ivy) raced out to an early lead they would never relinquish.
Princeton's goalkeeper Ellie DeGarmo was a huge difference in this one, stopping a career-high 17 shots in the win. Despite the score, Dartmouth always seemed to bounce back and pressure in the offensive end as the Tigers only held a 34-31 edge in shot attempts. However, more often than not, DeGarmo was there to thwart the home team's best chances. Freshman Kiera Vrindten had eight saves in goal for the home team.
A trio of players for the Big Green managed to score a pair of goals each as Kathryn Giroux, Kierra Sweeney and Cara DePippo all found the back of the net twice in the game. Courtney Weisse also notched her team-leading 19th of the season on Saturday.
Giroux also had six draw controls, most by any player in the game.
Tess D'Orsi had a game-high six points and four goals in the win, while Kathryn Hallett and Olivia Hompe each notched hat tricks of their own. Hompe added a pair of helpers for five points with Ellie McNulty recording four on one goal and a trio of assists.
For Dartmouth, it was the third straight loss after starting the season with four wins.
Princeton scored the first eight goals of the afternoon and led 10-1 at intermission. The Green and White bounced back with a much better second half, scoring seven of their eight goals in the final 30 minutes.
In all, the Tigers held a 20-16 edge in ground balls, a 17-11 advantage in draws and a 26-25 lead in shots on goal.
The Big Green are back in action Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Loudonville, New York, to take on Siena at 4 p.m.
