HANOVER, N.H. – The 2018 season started Saturday afternoon for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team. Despite a spirited near the end of the first half, the Big Green fell to No. 18 UMass on the road, 17-13.
Junior Elizabeth Mastrio came off the bench to have a career day, setting a new personal single-game high with six goals. Freshman Claire Marshall set a new program record for draw controls in a debut with 11, the third-best total in the 46-year history of the team.
Trailing 5-2 just over two-thirds of the way into the first half, the Big Green (0-1) began to chip away and then took the lead thanks to a 4-0 run over the next five minutes. Marshall's first career score was followed by tallies from Kierra Sweeney, Ellie Carson and Campbell Brewer.
However, the Minutewomen (1-0) — who had been 29-1 in their last 30 games at Garber Field coming into the day — had the answer before intermission, scoring the next three. Mastrio's second of the first half came with 58 seconds remaining and made it a one-goal deficit for the Green and White heading into the locker room.
UMass seemed to be the team that benefited most from the break, scoring six goals in the first eight minutes, while allowing only one to Mastrio and Dartmouth in that span. A 10-minutre scoreless stretch for both teams followed before a free-position goal for Mastrio finally got the goals going again.
Eight goals were scored in the final 12:14 of play between the teams playing one another for the first time since 2009. Three of those markers were Mastrio from the eight-meter arc, a place she notched 17 a season ago to lead all Ivy League players.
Carson and Marshall each added their second respective goals of the afternoon down the stretch as well. Tori Chanenchuck posted a pair of assists, while Katie Bourque had one of her own.
Not to be outdone by Mastrio, UMass' Hannah Burnett also posted six goals on the day, while teammate Kiley Anderson scored four times and dished out one helper for a five-point contest.
In goal, sophomore Kiera Vrindten was tested throughout and finished the afternoon with 11 saves. Her counterpart in the Minuewomen's Lauren Hiller stopped six of her seven in the second half.
An offensive game, there were 65 combined total shot attempts with the home team recording 35. The visitors held a 17-15 edge in draws thanks to Marshall's impressive start.
Dartmouth hosts in-state rival New Hampshire Wednesday afternoon in the home opener at Scully-Fahey Field. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
