BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team rolled to a 22-6 win Tuesday afternoon at Vermont in the final non-conference game of the season.
Â
The Big Green (9-4) — ranked 13th in one national poll and 20th in another this week — came into the game with the 10th-best scoring offense in the nation, but will certainly jump with their best single-game total this season.
Â
The Catamounts (7-6) dropped their second straight game to their regional rivals, as Dartmouth now owns a 23-6-1 all-time mark in 30 games played in the series.
Â
The game was all but over after 30 minutes of play at Virtue Field as the visitors took a 16-4 lead into the locker room. All six of
Kierra Sweeney's goals came in the first half, as did the career-high five goals and seven points from
Elizabeth Mastrio.
Â
Katie Bourque also had three goals and an assist in the opening frame, giving Dartmouth three players with hat tricks in the period.
Michelle Yu scored another three in the second half, making it four players with at least three goals in the win.
In total, nine players for the Big Green scored goals in the game, including
Maggie O'Gorman notching the first of her career, while
Adrie Luster scored her second and
Veta Mayer added her third of 2019. The 33 points recorded by the team is the second-best total this season (36 at Columbia).
Â
Jenna James and Elise Koehl each scored twice for the home team in the loss.
Â
The reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week
Kiera Vrindten stopped five and allowed five in nearly 50 minutes of action, while
Becca Wade and
Charlotte Wahle split the final 10 minutes and change in the circle for the Green and White, facing just one combined shot.
Â
Kathryn Giroux added nine draw controls, moving her career total to 377, a figure that is now 12th all-time in NCAA history. The visitors won 17-of-21 in the first half and finished the game with a 20-10 advantage on the draw.
Â
The Big Green also posted a season-high 16 caused turnovers in the game with
Claire Marshall leading the way with three. Mastrio, Bourque and
Riley Ricciardi each had two. Even more impressive was that Dartmouth forced Vermont into 16 of its 20 turnovers, while committing only 14 themselves.
Â
A huge Ivy League matchup now looms for the Big Green as Cornell comes to Hanover on Saturday in a battle of the two teams atop the conference standings at 4-1. The final game of the season at Scully-Fahey Field will get underway at 1 p.m. Check back with DartmouthSports.com this week for a complete preview and postseason clinching scenarios.
