AMHERST, Mass. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling to No. 22 UMass on Saturday by a score of 14-6 in non-conference action at Garber Field. The Big Green are now 1-1 on the season while UMass improves to 3-1.
Lucy Murray scored twice for the Big Green.
Katina Christensen,
Boo Dewitt, and
Catherine Erb all finished with two points as they each scored one goal and assisted one.
Rosie McCarthy also scored one goal.
Nieve Donegan,
Sophia Franco, and
Jev Ward each finished with two caused turnovers. Franco had three ground balls while
Isabella Godsick finished with six draw controls.
Charlotte Wilmoth and Fiona McGowan both had six points for the Minutewomen. Wilmoth finished with five goals and one assist while McGowan had four goals and two assists.
After going down 2-0 early in the first, Murray scored the first Big Green goal of the afternoon. Just over four minutes into the first quarter, Murray took advantage of a free position to score her first goal of the season.
Facing a 3-1 deficit to begin the second quarter, Dartmouth scored three of the first four goals of the frame to tie the game, 4-4. McCarthy opened the scoring after receiving a pass on the run from
Jev Ward. McCarthy split the defense before firing it into the back of the net. The Big Green tied the game, 3-3, just moments later after Erb scored her third goal of the season. Christensen picked up a loose ball in the middle of the field and carried it all the way down toward the UMass goal before a pass inside to Erb just outside the crease. Erb caught the ball and quickly shot it past UMass goaltender Gina Carroll.
The Minutewomen took a 4-3 lead, but the Big Green responded a minute later when Dewitt scored a free position goal to tie the game once again.
UMass scored the next four goals to take an 8-4 lead. Dartmouth started to mount the comeback looking to tie the game, scoring two goals just 1:07 apart midway through the third quarter. Christensen got on the board with the fifth Big Green goal of the afternoon followed by Murray's second goal of the day.
The Minutewomen scored in the final 30 seconds of the third to take a 9-6 lead into the fourth. They outscored the Big Green 5-0 in the final quarter.
Dartmouth returns to action on Wednesday against Bryant for the first of three straight games at Scully-Fahey Field. Opening draw is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
