CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Dartmouth women's rowing team enjoyed strong performances from all its crews at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend. The club eights and fours came in fifth and ninth on Saturday, then on Sunday, the championship eights and fours placed 20th and sixth, respectively.
The Head of the Charles is a three-mile, 4,800 meter course which features a number of turns. It is completed in a time trial format.
"It was the biggest Dartmouth women's rowing contingent we've ever sent down, and I thought the team really represented well," said head coach
John Graves. "To come away with a top five collegiate finish in the four and another top five finish in the club eights were definitely highlights. It was a really good step forward in terms of our depth as a team compared to last year where we had fewer entries; it showed increased depth from year to year. I was definitely pleased with that."
Saturday's top finisher came in the Women's Club Eights, as the Big Green came in fifth out of 42 crews with a time of 16:40.194, less than nine seconds behind second place. The club fours also posted a top 10 finish, placing ninth (18:58.751) out of 49 crews.
"The club eight getting top five — a medal in that event — it's awesome to come away with a medal for two years in a row," said Graves. "These are all super deep events. Getting in the top 10 of the club four is a really good accomplishment, guaranteeing an entry for next year."
On Sunday, Dartmouth placed sixth out of 18 crews in the Women's Championship Fours (15:04.176) (also as the fifth college crew). In the championship eights, the Big Green were 20th out of 30 with a time of 16:22.668, as the 14th-place college crew.
"We had three first-years and a junior racing in the champ four and did a great job getting fifth collegiately," said Graves. "The champ eight taking a step up into the championship event and stacking up against other crews, some of the top crews in the country, and being competitive, was really cool to see. It's such a challenging course out there and our varsity eight had to deal with a lot of traffic today, but did an awesome job of taking what was thrown at them and making the most of it. They definitely had a good piece."
The Big Green wrap up their fall schedule in two weekends, on Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Princeton Chase.
"Getting guaranteed [Head of the Charles] entries back for a bunch of those boats is really good," said Graves. "It's still pretty early in the season, so we go into the Princeton Chase with a chance to match up against a huge contingent of top teams. We're focused on going back to training with a big one in two weeks."
