STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Katie Elders and
Catherine Erb both registered hat tricks in the season opener for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team, but No. 11 Stony Brook claimed the victory on Sunday afternoon by a score of 18-11 in the second-ever meeting between the two teams.
First-years
Fiona O'Keeffe and
Mia Puccio each tallied their first collegiate goals. O'Keeffe also had four assists to finish with five points while Puccio added two assists to make it a three-point afternoon.
Ellie Burdick also earned her first collegiate point after picking up an assist in the fourth quarter.
Defensively,
Nieve Donegan had four ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers.
Sophia Franco and Burdick each had a caused turnover while Burdick also had three draw controls. Puccio led all players in draw controls with 11.
The Big Green drop to 0-1 while the Seawolves improve to 1-0.
After Stony Brook jumped out to a 3-0 lead,
Lucy Murray scored the first of two goals on the day with 8:30 remaining in the first quarter. Erb opened her scoring account for the game later in the quarter.
The Seawolves extended its lead to 11-3 going into halftime after outscoring the Big Green 5-1 in the second quarter.
The second half was favorable to Dartmouth, outscoring Stony Brook 8-7. O'Keeffe, Elders and Erb each scored in the third quarter. The Big Green scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter through Murray and Elders, cutting the deficit to six, trailing 15-9.
The Seawolves scored three straight to push the score to 18-9. Elders tallied the final two goals of the contest to complete the hat trick.
The Big Green went 14-14 on clears while holding the edge in ground balls (12-10) and draw controls (16-15).
Dartmouth has a quick turnaround with a trip to Siena on Wednesday afternoon. The non-conference matchup is slated for 2 p.m. and will be available to watch on Siena All-Access.
