DERBY, Conn. — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team dropped four of five events against Yale on Saturday, but an extremely competitive day saw each of its crews fall by no more than three seconds. The Big Green's fifth varsity eight won its race by more than 15 seconds, while the 3V was leading with 100 meters to go, but caught a crab.
"I thought all five of our lineups took a step forward today both in terms of race execution and overall speed, which was a direct result of two very good weeks of training," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "We need to continue stacking good weeks on good weeks, and this coming week of training and next weekend's test against a very good Brown program are critical if we want to continue progressing."
Dartmouth's varsity eight, ranked 10th nationally, posted a time of 5:16.3, narrowly behind a Yale crew ranked fifth in the country (5:13.6). The Big Green second varsity eight lost (5:21.0 to 5:18.2) while the 3V narrowly fell as well (5:26.9 to 5:24.2). The fourth varsity eight was just over a second behind the Bulldogs (5:25.7 to 5:24.6).
The Big Green's fifth varsity eight impressed with a time of 5:30.5, which was 15.5 seconds ahead of Yale (5:46.0).
