Dartmouth picked up one gold and two bronze medals
By: Justin Lafleur
WORCESTER, Mass. — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team continued its impressive recent success at the Eastern Sprints, picking up three medals for a second straight year to increase its total to 11 over the past three seasons. The Big Green's fifth varsity eight won gold for a third straight year while their 2V and 4V each took home bronze.
Â
Every Dartmouth boat reached their respective grand finals, except the varsity eight, but that crew was ever-so close. In their morning heat, the Big Green finished 0.041 seconds behind Syracuse to fall just short. They rebounded in a big way in the petite final, winning it to officially qualify Dartmouth's entire team for the IRA National Championship two weekends from now.
Â
"Anytime we're able to get so many crews in the grand finals, [it's a good day]," said Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "Our 1V raced a really solid heat. They laid it out there; they took a step forward as a crew and I'm hoping we can take another with that group between now and IRAs."
Â
The fifth varsity eight began the afternoon by remaining undefeated on the season. In their only race of the day, the Big Green finished in 5:50.205, just over a second ahead of Yale and more than nine seconds ahead of third-place Brown.
Â
Not long after, Dartmouth's 4V followed a win in its morning heat by finishing its grand finale in 5:52.758, good for third place.
Â
The second varsity eight later added a medal. In the morning, the Big Green finished in 5:34.512, just ahead of Brown who finished in 5:34.844, to officially qualify for the grand final. In the grand final, the Big Green edged Syracuse, finishing in 5:38.626 to the Orange's 5:38.938.
Â
"Those have been strong boats for us all year," said Allen. "The 5V has been undefeated up until this point. The 4V has been in that range where we thought they were capable of winning a medal. The 2V has had some strong performances and two weeks ago at the Lake Morey Invite, dropped a really close race to BU which took them down in the rankings significantly. This was a really good rebound for them and to come out of this regatta with a medal was a really impressive performance.
Â
Dartmouth's third varsity eight also reached the grand final, coming in fourth (5:47.142), but not far off the pace of Yale in third (5:43.158) and Harvard in second (5:42.062).
Â
The Big Green will now prepare for the IRA National Championship, which begins on Friday, May 31 in Mercer County Park in New Jersey.
